Why does the Blackberry Classic (along with other Blackberry's) not notify you of MMS group or picture messages without having your data turned on?

You need data to receive MMS. You don't get charged for MMS using it, but it still needs it to work

Is there a way to be notified of an MMS, and then turning on data to view? Or is this just the Blackberry way.

Nope. Either the message arrives to you, or it doesn't. You could get the $2 per month Data block applied to your account, which blocks all data use, except MMS, or you could get a small data plan to cover other bits of data which might be used while your phone is on. One of our lines is on a 100MB monthly data plan, and it is never fully consumed.

Thanks for the info. I do have a small data plan, but I was hoping to keep it off unless I need it. I'm sure I can arrange what apps use data, keep data on, and monitor usage. Again, thank you.

Bb10 is very good with apps not consuming data in the background. You can have the system monitor up as one of the cards and it shows off data used. I never had issues when I used my z30 with data .
