The bad news: Canadian roaming is horrible, Elaine :(
Your best bet is to buy a local SIM card in Russia though truth be told, I have no experience whatsoever there.
Alternatively, Piranha Mobile, Truphone, OneSimCard and eKit all offer international roaming at usually pretty good rates. I'd recommend you price them as well!

Also remember to get your phone unlocked if you decide to go with the prepaid route Sophia mentioned. For most phones, I'd recommend getting it unlocked by a 3rd party such as cellunlocker.net or gsmliberty
If you have an iphone, you can get it unlocked by koodo for $35 by giving them a call! :) 1-866-995-6636

You can unlock your phone yourself on the koodo site. The companies Daniel mentioned are fine but won't be much cheaper, if at all, even if you don't have an iphone. At least if something goes wrong, if you do it with koodo you can always count on help/refund or whatever.

Cellunlocker is often half price of Koodo, and sometimes even less than that. And if they can't unlock it, you get a refund.
