Am looking to buy am unlocked android phone and most would have either 850 or 1900 3G frequency which i believe works on Koodo. Would only one work or must the phone support both?

850 is better if you can only get 1 of those frequencies, but both is obviously preferred for optimum coverage.

I've had a phone without 850 (European Nokia E72) and it worked relatively well in urban areas in SW Ontario (at least, where I went), but this was in 2009 or so. Rural reception was non-existent.

I would not recommend any phone without both 850 and 1900.

Pretty much all of the more modern android phones will have both. You will be shooting yourself in the foot if you settle for only one band.
