Allow first MB of data usage to be free/less than $5

People are tired of getting charged $5 for using insignificant amounts of data.

I myself have had the problem of getting charged $5 for around 200kb/month of accidental data usage after trying to send picture messages, which requires data to be turned on, which may result in background apps like "Google services" using it, which you can not easily disable.

Reasons for accidental data may include:
- Sending a picture message
- Accidentally, temporarily turning on the option
- Buying a phone with the data on

These are just the ways that it happened to me, and other people I know

Lets have a look at the numbers for my current case.
I used 200kb of accidental data.
That's enough to send/receive only 8% of an average photo.
Getting charged $5 for downloading what's equivalent to 8% of a picture, throughout a whole month is unfair.

Here's some math to show how this charge compares to Koodo's real overage rate.

Their overage rate is $5/250MB
I paid 5$/200KB

I paid 2.5 cents/KB, overage rate is 0.00195 cents/KB

I paid 1280 times more for my extra usage above what I intended, compared to what Koodo's actual overage rate is.

How do you " accidently" send a photo?

I never said anything about accidentally sending a photo, I said accidentally using data while wanting to send a photo

Oh my mistake. So how do you accidentally use data "while wanting" to send a photo?

Hi Stephen, that's got to do with picture messaging (MMS) :) It's a common complaint (and rightfully so!) that data has to be enabled even though MMS in itself doesn't use up any data... but while it is enabled in order to send the MMS, it is quite possible to accidentally use data on something else (such as receiving an email or so)

This is why I recommend turning on Wifi to assist with this.

There's very little Koodo can do as that is how the HSPA network works.

Thanks Sophia. Still learning about the different plans and accromins. Did not understand the complexity involved with Jack's plan.

As per the link provided:

"Hey Dennis, it's not overlooked. We're still discussing it internally. I intentionally didn't want to give it a status before properly assessing it."

4 months ago, and no resolve yet?? Not acceptable in my opinion.

How many clients have left Koodo because of this??? ........Food for thought.

Very little, as any time it's brought up when the customer calls in, it's credited as a good will gesture.

I don't understand the logic of wanting to leave Koodo for something that every HSPA phone in the world has to do, regardless of carrier, to send mms... I guess they could do wind or mobilicity but that's a different story.

Currently, the first 25KB don't count towards the data usage. I wouldn't mind seeing this increased to the first 5 MB. As phones & operating systems become more advanced, they increase in size. So if someone new is activating a phone and they get the notice of the software update, they may not realize how big the update actually is.

I think this is a really good idea and should be implemented because I know lots of people who are "afraid" to turn on data to send picture/video messages because they might use data in the background by accident, having to pay $5 or whatever their data rates are.
