I bought a sim card from Amazon because I'm planning on visiting Canada. Can I activate it and get a postpaid plan over the phone? I want to just plug the SIM into my phone and be ready to use it when I step off the plane.

Postpaid requires a credit check and if you're not in Canada you don't have a Canadian credit history so you'll 99.999% be declined. Most countries you visit your only option is prepaid and you'll need a prepaid Sim specifically. Once you have that yes you can register and select service.

Did you buy a postpaid or a prepaid sim card? You need to be a Canadian resident for postpaid. Prepaid sim cards can simply be activated online though!

Prepaid SIMS are usually available shipped thru the mail from ebay.ca (not .com). You will get a $20 credit on activation, so the net cost is very minor. The whole activation process is done online, so no need to be in Canada or to have Canadian ID or credit to get the service up and running.

You can top it up with prepaid vouchers available from these stores:

Your gear will be fine if you are unlocked and on AT&T or T-Mobile.
