Accessing my SIM

I'm trying to unlock my my android phone. Samsung Galaxy 5. The rep gave me instructions that said to get another carrier. After reading a number of similar problems here, I'm beginning to understand that I have to buy a new SIM. How do I access my SIM card on my current phone? I am in Canada.

If you're trying to unlock your phone then you need to get it unlocked by the carrier it was bought from. If it was bought from Rogers, they need to unlock it, and so on.

Why do you think you need to buy a new sim? The sim card is usually located on the side of the phone and requires a sim tool (or something small and pointy like a paperclip) to access.

All right, looks pretty straight forward. thanks I'm with Koodo. Can the other (helper) be with Koodo too, or does it have to be a completely different carrier?

Has to be different.
Im sure you have friends who are not with Koodo/Public/Telus who can pop in their sim to trigger the unlock code entry screen

You don't have to buy a new SIM, you can borrow from someone else from another carrier. To access your SIM card, you would need to open the back of your phone, remove the battery, and the SIM. Here is one video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rPip6x0pUQ

I don't think Koodo have videos for unlock. They are similar though.

The long and the short of it: when you stick a SIM into your phone, it tries to register itself with the home network, first by checking if the SIM card is valid and then using the card credentials to connect, just like an ATM card.

A locked phone will only recognize the original vendor's SIM as valid. You can spend all day playing with your Koodo or Telus SIMS and the phone will never object. Until you try to use some other vendor's SIM, and that's where you will get the message to enter an unlock code. Similarly, as long as you stick with your home bank, you will be OK using your ATM card, but the minute you try it in a foreign machine, you will be asked for some extra steps to authorize the transaction.

Easiest way to get another vendor's SIM:

You will not have to worry about bands, or other technical details mentioned in the video since you will not be connecting. When you boot up the phone with the Bell SIM, you can then enter the code when requested. Reboot and the request for a code should not appear. You will have a no service type message because the SIM has not been registered to a plan, but the phone has successfully been unlocked.

An option or workaround, when you don't have access to a SIM card from another carrier. DialĀ  #7465625*638*# from your phones' dialpad. Enter the eight-digit unlock code, then press Submit or Okay. A confirmation message should appear verifying the unlock was successful. Works on Samsung devices from the S5 to S7, might work on newer models too.

If you're making no headway, consider checking kijiji.ca in your neighbourhood for independent cell phone repair or dealer services. They should have you fixed up in a jiffy for a few bucks.

The string of numbers #7465625*638*# only brings up the unlock screen. Enter the unlock code one more time. If the code provided fails to unlock your phone, call or message Koodo and ask the rep to verify that you have the correct code. The unlock code you received from Koodo should be 8-digits in length. There have been one or two instances where Koodo has provided incorrect unlock codes. From what I've read, resolution was fairly quick.

Thanks for all the help. I went to the Koodo kiosk and I found out the problem was on the other end. So, my phone is good to go.
