3G/4G data isn't working at all

I switched to Koodo about 2 months ago when I bought a brand new unlocked HTC One X+ (Android 4.2 Jelly Bean). I took my phone to a Koodo store and got set up. Everything seemed to be working fine as I walked off, but it's become clear to me that I simply cannot access data over 3G/4G at all.

Is this a common problem? Should I take my phone back to a Koodo store and see if they can reconfigure it to work better? Is there anything I can do myself? I seriously doubt this is a problem with the phone, and I was assured that it was compatible with the network so I'd just like to know if there's anything I can do to get this problem straightened out.

For the time being, I'm on a data saver plan, so at least I'm not paying much for data!

Go into your settings - More settings under wireless & networks - Mobile Networks - Access point names. Then click on the APN named Koodo & make sure the settings are those in the picture below. Then click menu and save.
Then delete any other APNs for any other providers. Also make sure that your phone isn't set to 2g or GSM only. Also make sure airplane mode didn't get turned on.

Thanks for your reply. I just checked through my settings and everything seems to match. I deleted a pre-existing Telus APN from the list (which wasn't selected as the default anyway, as I would expect).

I can't test my phone at the moment, though, since the building I work in is basically impenetrable to wireless signals. I'll post again later when I am able to test things out.

Any further ideas to try out (if there are any) would still be appreciated though. I'm expecting that nothing will be different since I haven't really changed much.

Quick update:

With 2 bar signal strength my phone just successfully logged into Skype after I noticed that the Network Operator setting in the Mobile Data settings was not set to Koodo. Once that was set, I immediately got better signal than I had and it seems like I might have working mobile data.

I guess I'll be testing tonight to see if this issue is resolved, but right now it looks positive.

Sorry for the confusion. My data saver plan is currently charging me $5/mo for using less than 25MB of data, so clearly SOME data is being sent, but the transmission rate must be terrible. Or the measurement of data transmission on Koodo's side isn't very accurate. I don't know.

As you suggest, I only ever see 3G or H on my phone's OS display. I don't believe I've ever seen H+, although I'm fairly sure my phone supports it. So it appears that the mobile data connection is being made, but that either the data rate is completely awful no matter where I am, or there is some other issue beyond just being connected that is preventing my apps from accessing data.

Just maintaining the connection to the network could eat up 20-ish MB of data in a month, so it's possible that the transmitted data is just due to my phone being on the network and not actually using any data for anything else.

Actually your phone can be on network and not use any data if the connection is off but email and other apps use push technology to keep reminding the server you're there.

If you're seeing the 3g indicator then you have at least a3g connection.

Have you checked the coverage maps to see if 4g is available in your area?

Did you check your imei through the compatibility tool? Maybe it's not compatible? I didn't have that issue in Toronto for sure.

I have not, although I asked Koodo about it pretty thoroughly when I put my phone on the network, because Mobilicity and Wind both claimed my phone was incompatible with their systems.

Just double-checked the compatibility tool to be certain... It claims my phone is compatible.

According to gsmarena.com the max speed on the one x+ is 21mbps (3g) real world test in contested areas will put that speed down somewhat.

By contrast my s2x is rated at 42mbps (4g) so real world will have it somewhat lower. If your phone is saying 3g/H then it would appear then it would appear that it's functioning correctly.

I suggest you download an app called speed test to get an idea of your true speeds

I'd love to be getting anywhere near 21mbps. Or 2mbps. That would be good.

The speeds Im experiencing are so poor that Google Play times out every single time I try to access it. Google Maps doesn't load at all. I'm even hard pressed to get bus times when I want to.

This is not correct functionality.

Thanks for your help so far, though. I don't mean to seem ungrateful. I'm just a little frustrated. It's been very helpful to have someone run me through a more comprehensive troubleshooting process than I knew how to do on my own, but I'm not willing to accept that this is normal. What I've got right now is almost the same as not having 3G whatsoever.

I'll download and run the app once I've got Wi-Fi so that I can access Google Play. Hopefully that will give me some more information.

Are you aware that Koodo doesn't guarantee data on non-koodo phones?

Surely they don't. I'm aware that this is the case, but I'm not coming after Koodo for a refund. I just want my phone to work better than it is.

If nothing can be done, I'll try another provider.

I never stated that you were going for a refund, just letting you know that there's no guarantee of working data on non-Koodo phones with Koodo. The fact that it's an international phone might be the cause. I wish I knew what it was aout international phones that makes data difficult to work on it.

Just because it's from another country doesn't make it an international model. If it was locked to a carrier / purchased from a carrier then it's not an international model. An international model is factory unlocked and was not bought from a carrier. What is the model # of the phone, do you know?
If not go into Settings - About device and it will be shown.

I'm certain that it's factory unlocked. While I'm not sure what the model number is (or even specifically which number you mean) I can tell you that the IMEI is .

Go to where I said in settings & it should say the model . You might want to delete your imei # also so someone doesn't use it for evil

While it seems that my menus are slightly different, I found my model number under Settings > About > Phone Identity and the Model Number appears as "HTC One X+"

Just out of curiosity, how can an IMEI be used for evil? I'm not sure what the number is for, but based on what you're saying it must be unique to my unit.

It is my opinion that while the phone is compatible the baseband is optimised for uk frequency ranges. I know there's a dialer code to get it to look at the Koodo freq first but I can't recall the code.
