You would be better served to get a local number from a good VOIP service, and have it forwarded to your mobile phone. Some of them will even forward SMS messages from the other number to your mobile phone.

My cell phone's area code is from city I used to live in, and still travel to quite frequently. But the city I reside in is a couple hours away, and in a different area code. I have a VOIP number in the new city's area code that is forwarded to the cell phone, and text messages get forwarded too (at a modest cost of 1 cent per message). Voice calls forwarded from the VOIP line to the cell phone incur a cost too, something like a half a cent per minute.

That way people in the new city can call or text me without paying long distance, and all my friends and family in the old city can call me at the old number too.

The VOIP services cost me about 30 bucks a year; very reasonable.
