I am travelling to Hawaii shortly. I've had trouble in the past trying to find carriers, and have paid for the add-on without being able to use it. How do I find a carrier if the connection is not automatic?

For Android it will be somewhere along the lines of:
Settings, Mobile Networks, Network Operators, Search Networks
For iOS:
Settings, Carrier, Turn off automatic

Thank you very much.  Is there any carrier in particular I should choose?

Try my suggestion below before manually selecting a network. If you still have problems try Allans suggestions, pick each network and see if it will register. Your phone will tell you if it can't register.

Chad is right, a power cycle should do the trick if the phone doesn't connect automatically. Manually selecting a carrier should not be necessary. Keep in mind that depending where you are in Hawaii, you might just be in a no service zone :) If you stick to touristy places, the phone should connect on it's own

Once you arrive in Hawaii, it's a good idea just to Power cycle your phone (turn it off and then on).
