My iphone 5 that I've used for a year suddenly says "no sim card installed." What do I do?

Try powering off your phone, remove the SIM card for a minute or two, reassemble and power the phone back on.

Thank you, but how do I remove the SIM card on an iphone 5 without a special tool/key?

If you dont have the SIM removal tool you can find something else that fits in the hole such as a paper clip or something like that and just push straight in and the tray should pop out enough to grab it with your fingers.

In the carton that your phone came in, there should be a silver-coloured SIM ejection tool, it's usually attached to the user manual envelope. The SIM card tray hole is located on the right hand side of your phone. I've included a short video below.

If that didn't work, another option to try is to reset the network settings by going to: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings - tap Reset Network Settings. Note: This will restore network settings to their defaults and will wipe any Wi-Fi passwords you may have stored.
