I got a plan for my mother that has airtime only, no data. she is connected to the wifi at home all the time. when I checked her usage today, she has incurred $15 data charge. I don't know how this happened. So to prevent this, I called Koodo and asked them block the data. I was told that there would be a $2 per month for this service. I couldn't believe what I heard. Is this true? Is this a common practice?

Yeah it never used to cost money but now they have it configured in such a way that still allows you to send picture messages. This comes with a $2 charge.
If you would rather just block the data for free but be unable to send MMS, you can turn the data off on your phone.
The other providers have a charge for this now too. I'm pretty sure at least. I know with Bell it costs $1.

Full data block should be free.  Partial data block (allows picture messaging) costs more

No, they don't do the free one anymore.
If you have it already, you can keep it.
but the $2 block is now unavailable.

I mean the data block allows MMS is $2.

If you just want to block all your data, just turn your data off at the phone level.

I'd suggest the data block for kids who might try an end-run around the settings. You can probably trust your mother to not mess around wth the settings, and take Mitchell's advice, and turn data off on the phone. If you need help finding the setting, just let the community know the model phone your mother has, an we can help out.
