Why purchase from Koodo when I can get free elsewhere?


Just purchased an iphone and was given a 4S after checking others providers they are offering at a cost of $0. Why is kodoo not following suit. Thinking I will be taking my phone back and switching.

There is no such thing as a free phone. Make no mistake, you're paying for it one way or the other. Zero initial cost does NOT equal zero cost device. Do the math, and you may be in for a surprise. Always compare devices on their retail prices, because in case of cancellation, that's when you'll be crying over that "free" phone.

I think you possibly just got fooled buy fido's $0 iphone 4s offer. Koodo offers it for the same $0 on a tab L. After 2 years you owe nothing regardless which company you buy it from. If you happen to leave before fido will charge you a part of the $450 retail price. Same as koodo.

You should always get what you feel the happiest with, but as David and Chris pointed out, there is simply no such thing as a FREE phone. You will be paying it off through your plan in the coming two years, so you should definitely take into consideration your monthly cost and your options. For example, with Koodo you can change your plan on a monthly basis, you are not locked into any plan. Is that the case with the other provider as well? How many minutes and data do you get for what you'll be paying? It's wise to think about these things instead of just concentrating on "free" vs some payment up front 🙂 If you have done all that math and reviewed the options and if you still think you're happier with that party, go for it 😃 Nobody will be angry with you 🙂

Bell/Virgin for sure. If it's an existing 3 year contract with Bell or SuperTab with Virgin, they mandate a plan change. Rogers and Telus have a little bit more flexibility but have steeper requirements to keep it and get a premium phone; Koodo and Fido are pretty much on par with keeping your old plan.

All existing 3 year contracts can't have their plans changed for obvious reasons. I'm also referring to the present, going forward. Not what was in the past. And I know for sure Bell and Virgin allow you to.

This is because of how Koodo's subsidy model works - it's a max of $150, $300, or $500 off the phone - because it's based entirely on the retail price. They have to change that price on the phone to align it with their Tab levels. The other guys don't care about retail price that much and will simply offer a "better deal" but the cancellation fee/subsidy doesn't change much at all. However, you do have a point. Fido does offer it for $0 on their Smart plans, which are basically identical to Koodo's plans with Tab M... if you feel like that's the route to go, then nobody's stopping you. Question, though: are you an existing client of Koodo or were you coming in fresh? If you were existing, I would say if you had any sort of promo plan ($60 Super 6GB, $56 Unlimited/2GB, and $45 400mins/unlimited incoming/1GB data come to mind) it was probably better than what's being offered now so there would be more of an argument to stay. If you're new... there's really no way I can convince you to pay $150 vs $0 upfront for nearly the same thing.

All I have to say is to look at the fine print of the terms of such a $0 phone. Most of the time, your plan cannot go under $70/month or you WILL be billed a good portion of the subsidized cost of the phone. Good luck.

Best deal for the money? Prepaid with a 2nd hand phone 🙂

Not if you're a heavy data user... but then again, if someone takes $25 base plan + 500 mins booster and $30 1GB data booster, that is arguably better value each month (assuming they use all of it in a 30 day period) unless someone talks a lot on the phone.

Well of course Jonathan. For many, prepaid isn't feasible for these reasons. However, many would be surprised if they really took time to look at their real world usage. It's what brought me to prepaid!

Depending on what your looking for you can always take customer service into consideration. Koodo was the first company to really do a forum like this (obviously you found it and are finding it useful already), Koodo has launched many things first before other carriers do, and has won JD Powers highest in customer satisfaction the past couple years. As well as scored lowest in complaints compared to pretty much any other carrier in Canada.....so whats good customer service worth to you?
