what to do about iphone 4s not working in India?

I have an unlocked iphone 4s. Originally Rogers. Since my arrival in India I have the NO SIGNAL message, both when my Kodoo SIM or a local SIM is inserted. Any leads?

The local carrier is BSNL and it seems from the list provided by Koodo here: http://help.koodomobile.com/coverage-long-distance-and-travelling/travelling that this carrier would be compatible.

Hello Sang-gye! Have you checked your settings for the network to make sure 3G is connected? Go to Settings > General > Cellular > make sure 3G and Data (if needed) are set to ON. Let us know 🙂 -Dan

Thank you, Dan, but 3G is enabled as is cellular data. I just reset network settings. No change. Still No Service. Because of the time difference and the fact that I can only sometimes get into this internet cafe, this conversation will take a long time. So if you have other suggestions please give them to me at the same time. more desperate

thanks so much rikkster ... didn't work. I switched the carrier detection from automatic (where it didn't see nothin') to manual. Now I see a list of carriers, none of which is mine. BSNL is a carrier available all over India, but the phone doesn't see it.

oh ... and I tried to enter the APN settings, but most of the parameters that are given on the webpage you kindly included the link for are not required and the few that I could enter didn't do the job.

You're welcome Sang-gye. I noticed that a lot of the networks are listed under 2G, try setting your phone to 2G mode, do a manual scan and see if the carrier shows up.

Thanks for checking in Veronica, I suspect that setting it to 2G means, disabling 3G and no .... it didn't work. I see all kinds of other carriers, but not BSNL. However, I know that they have coverage here. I was at their customer service centre yesterday but they can't help me because, the sim card is not in my name. (For anybody's info: you can only get a sim card if you are Indian or someone Indian serves as reference for you) I've talked to some people here (locals) and they claim that there is a country lock that would still need to be lifted for me to be able to use my iphone here. Have you ever heard anything about that?

There was another article here that I happened to stumble upon regarding an iPhone 5 and it would likely include your iPhone 4s as well. If the phone was purchased at Rogers and carrier unlocked to work with Koodo, from what I'm reading, your iPhone would be limited to usage within North America. If your iPhone was purchased outright from Apple and without contract, then the phone can be used worldwide. hi rikkster, thanks again ... I contacted Rogers and they said the phone is unlocked. No, exceptions for different countries. They suggested a restore of the iphone (which I cannot do because since I updated to ios 8, my laptop and iphone no longer talk to each other - the perfect storm). The thing that makes most sense to me is that maybe the sim card is a 2G card and thus not working. s.

Hi Rikkster - thanks so much. The sim card is from BSNL Rajasthan. I am in Punjab, but the whole point of using BSNL is that it has a nationwide network ... So, your message was very helpful because, while I don't see BSNL when I scan for carrier networks, I do see CellOne. I chose to connect to it, but nothing changes. 😞 Still 'no service'

You're welcome Sang-gye. If you can somehow get your iPhone to communicate with your laptop, this should resolve the problem. Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your laptop? The latest version at time of print, is 12.1.2.(27).
