unlocking Koodo iPhone with no sim card

I've upgraded my Koodo iPhone 5 to a Koodo iPhone SE. My sim card has been moved to the new phone, and I'm now selling the iP5. My buyer is with Rogers, so he'd like to unlock the phone.

  1. Can [b]HE have the phone unlocked, or do I need my Koodo account info to do it?
  2. If he can pay to get the unlock code, does he need his Rogers sim first, or can he just unlock it right away?
I really just wanted to sell it as a Koodo phone, so if the buyer wants to unlock it I want to confirm I'm out of the loop ... thx.

Only the Koodo account holder can unlock the phone with Koodo. You're probably best off to insert your SIM back in the phone, request an unlock, then factory reset it. Otherwise the buyer would have to find a third party to unlock at much greater cost.

As Sophia says, best for you to unlock it and raise your price by the $50 unlock fee.

You should not need to put your SIM in to unlock the phone, but you will need to identify it - likely by its IMEI number, so look that up in Settings > General > About before you call Koodo!

When the new purchaser insert his Rogers SIM, it should go through the unlock & set up precess then!

Thanks for the quick replies!

So, if I understand these responses (and other research) correctly ... Koodo can be contacted by anyone to get an unlock code for $50 (plus tax). Using that code and the IMEI number (which is on the phone and on the box) the phone can be unlocked. That tells me I don't have to take the time & effort to go through the process - anyone with the phone, code and IMEI number can do it, right?

As long as they are with Koodo and registered the phone on their network first, yes....

Now I'm confused again! They are with Rogers. Why do they have to be with Koodo? If they were they wouldn't need to unlock it

Koodo can only apply the $50 unlocking charge if there is an active koodo account to apply the charge to.

If you are desperate to sell the phone without unlocking it for them, recommend they get a Koodo prepaid account, register the phone with that and add $50 in funds just for the sake of unlocking the phone. But really, it would probably be much easier for all parties involved if you unlocked it for them and ask them to give you the $50.

Since nobody has specifically mentioned it yet, the unlock process for iphones is different than other phones. Apple does not use a code to unlock the phone. Instead, koodo needs to use special software to request the unlock through apple's database. The phone is then unlocked when it is restored through itunes.

True, or when it is factory reset if you don't want to go through iTunes.
To wrap up this thread ... I took your wise advise and simply called Koodo to unlock the iPhone and add the $56 to my bill, then added that amount to the price of the phone. I believe the purchaser can put in their Rogers sim and connect to iTunes to complete the unlock. Thanks for your help & Merry Christmas!

Right you are 🙂 And since you would be resetting the phone before you sell it to wipe all accounts and data, the moment the Rogers buyer sets up their phone, it will be unlocked. No iTunes needed (unless they want to). Just mentioned it to be thorough 🙂
