Telus vs Koodo - iPhone

I have been with Telus for the last 10 years and my contract is expiring in a few days. I have been thinking about upgrading to an iPhone 6 and after calculation it seems like Koodo is way cheaper (almost 300$ after two years). Now, knowing that Telus owns Koodo and that therby I'll get the same quality of network, why would anyone ever get a plan at Telus ? In other words, what's Telus bringing to the table that Koodo can't?

Telus is the premium brand and offers more services/options than Koodo does when it comes to consumers, both for personal and business. Koodo is just personal and offers limited services/options/add-ons.
Thanks. Can you give me a few examples of services/options/add-ons that I won't have with Koodo?

Hi Dario, If you look at Telus, the plans are quite different and many of them offer more data then Koodo currently does. But as you said, it's the same network so if the Koodo plans fit your needs, no reason to not join 🙂 Cheers, Peter

Ok, all the stuff that I don't need, but that I have been charged for the last 10 years 🙂 Anyway, at least I got a great service with them and hope it will be the same with Koodo.

Just be responsible. Know your plan, know your usage, be aware of any overage you incur, and take care of your smart phone (if you drop it, expect it to break and have to buy a new phone). If you do all that then you will be fine

Well sometimes there are high end plans that come out to be better than Koodo's but it's rare. For example, I'm with Telus and I have Unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, and 6GB data for $85. Koodo can't match it. I can renew a term every time I want a phone and get a premium subsidy on any of their phones, of which Telus has more options and colours available. My account is also shareable, so I can add a line for $60 to get a premium subsidy phone ($50 for a "lite" phone and $40 for BYOD) and share my data between the lines. Koodo also doesn't offer that for me so I would stick with Telus for whenever my future wife wants to merge bills lol

For iPhones (at least the 6) there really isn't any subsidy from any of the carriers/sub-brands, except Koodo. Your 24-month cost will be essentially the same as buying from Apple; the carriers effectively give you an interest-free loan of around $300-$500, in exchange for locking your phone ($35 unlock fee). It is going to cost you around $2185 on contract, assuming an Unlimited/500GB plan. With Fido/Koodo you can get this down to $2045 buying the phone from Apple. And currently you can get down to $1935 on contract (they have an extra $100 off), although they aren't currently carrying the full range of colours. Telus plans seem to have "sharable data", which might be a selling point if you have others you want to have a joint account with, and perhaps those in Telus areas might get bundling advantages. But with subsidies flattening out and BYOD discounts, it certainly seems that many people can get services comparable to Telus for less money?
Thanks everyone. Having this cool community is actually an "option" the corporate style Telus doesn't have.:) I'm getting my new Koodo plan tonight.

I have an Iphone 4 32g  and a great plan with Koodo and wish to keep that plan but want to upgrade my phone.  Is there any way I can keep that plan and and having at least as much capacity.  Probably would like to pay straight out for phone but am open to options.

Hi Lynda,

As long as you don't use the tab plus you can keep your plan and just add-on the tab cost should you choose to use the tab. Here are two cost estimates for you, one with the iPhone SE 64gb and one for the iPhone 6S 64gb. These are the only two models that Koodo offers in more than 16gb.

If you want to pay for the phone outright, I would advise getting it direct from Apple.  This way the phone is unlocked and you get all the capacity and colour options.

Apple are also the only people who directly perform warranty repairs. Other carriers just pass the iPhones on to Apple. May as well skip a step.
Very useful! Hats off to everyone!
Just found this forum and very helpful.  I'm coming off a company provided phone for the last 10 years and am in need of a personal one.  Have definitely decided on the Telus network because of their access to the interior but am seriously considering Koodo as the carrier.  Any updates since this last post 10 months ago?

I can confirm the information is still up to date! Nothing has changed. Koodo and Telus run on the same network still and we still have a great CS.
Hey guys I currently just finished my Telus contract and was looking to go month-month as the $80+/month min for renewals is just not plausible for me. I currently have a shoddy iphone 5, 1gb, my 10, 6pm E&W, 200 daytime mins for $55.
After tons of research these months (Oct 2015) I have found Fido and Koodoo  offer the best value plans. Only advantage Fido has over Koodoo is 2-years free of Spotify services ($240 value).
Other than that what would be the advantages of coming over to Koodoo?
I started off with Koodo when I first got it,  but now Telus will charge me $15/mo for Text Message only with my Loss Hearings, and it includes Unlimited text messages and it is good for Nationwide service.    My wife has her cost with Telus is for her at $45/mo for her use talk/voice/messages nation wide and unlimited messages.    Who else can match or beat that offer.   So I say Good Bye Koodo and and thanks and now I say Hello Telus.

Unlimited nationwide minutes and unlimited texting at Koodo only costs 40$ per month.

Unlimited nationwide minutes and Unlimited texting with Telus only costs $15 per month.  I am on limited funds and I had to switch over into Telus for a cheaper cost.

What province are you in? I find it hard to believe that Telus charges only that.
