The OS or operating system on any device, not just iPhone takes up the greatest percentage of storage space. While Apple may advertise total storage capacity as being 8 GB, Apple's iOS 7 shrinks that number down to only [b]4.9 GB of usable storage space, iOS 7 taking up a hefty 3.1 GB of storage space. App and OS updates as well as the apps themselves, music, pictures, contacts, basically anything you store on the phone will take up whatever storage space you have left.
