Roaming Charges when in US

I'm having some trouble understanding roaming charges. Will I be charged extra simply for having my phone on (and not on airplane mode) in the US or will I only be charged the extra rates if I do certain things (ie. text, receive voice calls, use internet based things when not connected to wifi)? Thanks!

If you leave your phone on people can text you and that will cost you extra while you are roaming in the US. Data if you leave your phone on is also running in the back and that will cost too. Best either to take the sim card out and just use the phone in wi-fi or get a US add-on.
Thanks for your reply! Just so I can be extra clear--what kind of data runs in the background?

Incomming texts while Roaming in the USA are not charged

As long as data roaming is turned off (which it is by default) you can safely leave your phone on while Roaming and not incur extra charges.

Answering calls, returning the texts, or using network data will cost extra.

For outgoing text you pay 5$ per 100 text per billing cycle.

As long as data roaming is turned off (...

In order to get access to the "Data roaming" box, you may have to turn on "Data enabled", if only temporarily. Otherwise, "Data roaming" will be greyed out and your previous preset, whether currently enabled or not, will become active when you turn the mobile data back on.
Lovely, thanks so much for your help!
If you leave your sim card in and turn off your data and don't answer your phone, but your voice mail answers it while you are in the states do you get charged.

No charge as long as you don't pick up the phone in the USA. May as well leave the phone in airplane mode and record an "I'm away message" in voicemail if it's a big deal. No incoming texts though. Otherwise, train yourself to check incoming call display before answering phone reflexively. Not picked up = no roaming charge. Free incoming (but not outgoing) texts.
