I have an old iPhone 4. If I were to get it unlocked, could I use it as a backup phone even though it's only 3G and my plan is 4G/LTE?

Hey James, that won't be a problem at all! All you will have to do is switch your sim card over to your iPhone if something were to happen to your other phone and then the phone will just automatically pick up the koodo 3G bands you just wont be able to use 4G/LTE because the phone is compatible with those network bands. Hope this helps!

Ok, but what if I’ve lost the old phone, like if it drops out of my pocket into a volcano?

i have an old iPhone 4. Could I then get a SIM card and do a Cloud Restore?

better yet, could I set up this second phone BEFORE this all happens? Losing your phone and farting around getting it switched to a new one is quite a Spot of Bother.

You can definitely get a replacement sim card and use the older phone. Doing a cloud restore to a phone as old as an iPhone 4 is really more a matter of whether the phone itself can handle it. You can set the phone up anytime, but a sim card will be permanently deactivated if you activate it then go back to the old SIM card for more than 90 days (consecutively).
