Is it necessary to have 3G on to make phone calls and to text? If so, are we charged "data" for having this on?

I have just found out that I went WAY over my data usage. This was mostly because the packages were not properly explained in the store I bought from. My question is: When I am only using 3G (i.e. Cellular data is turned OFF), do I get charged any data usage on my plan for: a) making phone calls, b) sending texts, or c) sending picture texts? To clarify, I have the 60/month (up to 1GB) data plan. I ask because when I turn 3G off, I can't do anything (i.e. call, text etc) so I seem to have to have it on to use my phone at all. The Koodo rep I talked to told me to make sure the 3G and Cellular data was turned off so as to not use any data, but then my phone is totally useless (i.e. no calls or texts). Help clarify please?! Thanks.

3G and cellular data are two different things. Koodo does not have a 2G network, only 3G and higher, so turning off 3G will prevent the phone from connecting to koodo at all. Turning cellular data will prevent the phone from using any data.

Hi Hilary, You need to keep 3G on. Koodo's network is 3G only so you need it to connect to the cellular network. Leave the "Enable 3G" option to ON. If you want to turn off data, then set "Mobile Data" to OFF only. Voice calls and text messages DO NOT use data, so you can still use them with Mobile Data OFF. However, you will not be able to send picture texts because that does require data.

3G - On, Data - Off a) No data charge for normal voice calls (online calls with skype, etc will not work unless you are connected to wifi because your data is off and this service requires data/wifi) b) No data charge for regular texts. (iMessages will not work unless you are connected to wifi because your data is off and this service requires data/wifi) c) No data charges for picture messages, however picture messages cannot go/come through if Data is Off. Picture messages will not work over wifi. Yes. Koodo uses 3G and does not have a 2G network. If you turn off 3G you will not able to use Koodo's network on your iphone. I hope this helps clarify things Hilary
Ok Thanks. I knew that the 3G and Cellular data were two different things, just wasn't sure if 3G allows your phone to use data because the guy I phoned on the help line said that it doesn't use any data. Good to know that I can just turn all Mobile Data off. My question now would be, how to I do that on an iphone? Thanks!

You're missing a step there Dennis 😉 For iOS 6 or earlier Settings > General > Network/Cellular (will say one of the two options) > Cellular Data For iOS 7 Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data

Right, thanks for all of your help!
when I am on 3G,
I can call, text without being charged,
but how about automatic updates of e-mails, instagrams, etc. ?
I DO NOT want to be charged just because my apps are doing updates.
So if I am on 3G, will it charge me for those checking e-mails, automatic updates?

Yes you will be charged if you are using data and data in on.  Just turn off data and leave 3G on and it should be fine.

Note that 3G/4G, LTE are network types.
Data works on 3G/4G and LTE
However as of today, Koodo only uses 3G/4G for Talk and Text
