iPhone picture messaging

So I was previously on a prepaid phone. I only paid about $10/month (+taxes) for texting 2500 which meant I would send/receive 2500 texts.. Including picture messaging. Now that I am switched to a tab I have noticed a major flaw in the system!! With the prepaid you *did not** need data to send picture messages.. But if you switch the the tab, you must have data to send picture messages!! Wth?? That is completely whacky, even when you're around wi-fi.. Still need data. Does anyone else this is completely ridiculous? I used up all of my data last month because I was completely unaware of this (should have read the fine print). But now that I know, I think it's stupid. Also, my boyfriend has an iPhone on my account (we both do).. I think I read somewhere that you can picture message from iPhone to iPhone with wi-fi, is this true? I'm not complaining if so.. But I would say that's another flaw, like only the privileged with the "all mighty" iPhone can send pic messages without having more of there data being used up?? Hmmm

Mobile data is required for picture messaging regardless of prepaid or post-paid. If you have your data turned on you need to make sure no apps are running in the background that may be using data. If you both have iMessage on your iphones, you can send pictures through wifi with iMessage

He just answered your question. You might have changed something in the settings! Regardless of pre-paid or post-paid. Any carrier. For picture messaging to work you need data on.

It's not because you switched to the Tab, it's just how HSPA (3G+) phones work on all carriers on all platforms. They need to access the data network to send picture messages. If your plan has unlimited SMS and MMS messages, then any data used by sending those photos does not count towards your data plan. However, since you're using a smartphone, it is possible for apps for weather, sports scores, games, FB, Twitter, emails, etc. to automatically update in the background once your data is turned on, which causes this headache if you're not on a data plan. I would recommend turning auto-updates off in your settings, if you can. You can't manually edit APN settings on an iPhone either, otherwise there's a workaround to allow MMS (pictures) to go through but not regular internet. You asked about sending pics over WiFi. That would be an iMessage. It requires internet access, but yes, you can technically use that for sending pictures over WiFi (but this will only work to other iPhones).
I called a Koodo rep and asked about this.. I must have been misinformed because he told me that my data was use up through picture messaging. I do not have automatic updates set up.

Data does technically gets used. But it does not count against your bucket of data on your plan
