What kind of iPhone is it? Did you pay $10 or $20 for the sim card?

Make sure it's the most updated iTunes. Also make sure your active Koodo sim is in the phone.

You shouldn't need to update carrier settings via iTunes at all. Sometimes this helps with issues, but it isn't a required step. Is your iPhone already activated, or are you trying to activate it after a restore?

It's possible that it's not a Telus iPhone, then.

Go to Settings>General>About What does it say for Carrier? Does it say Telus?

Hmm… it might be the sim card. Have you tried Resetting the Network Settings or a factory reset?

Yes. Either it's the sim card or the phone. They can try another sim card to narrow down your problem

I really think the seller sold her an iPhone that's really with another carrier. There is no reason why it shouldn't work unless a) seller lied or b) phone is legitimately defective, which i doubt

I thought so too, but she says that it says Koodo in the General > About section.

Try turning the phone off and taking out the SIM Card and putting it back in, then turn the phone on and try it again. I've had some issues with phones with SIM Trays like the iPhone or Nexus 5 and the SIM Card not sitting right when you put it in, pulling it out and putting it back in has fixed the issue for me in the past. Also it can take a little time up to an hour or so for your phone to work after you first activate your SIM card on self serve usually it's it's within 15 minutes though.

Plus my iPhone always requires a restart when I change SIM cards.

Keep in mind, this is not 100% guaranteed. If you tried everything and you still cannot get it to connect, then your next option is to get it unlocked.

If the SIM is not faulty and it's indeed a Telus phone, I'd wager that it's defective. I don't see how unlocking it will help.
