I lost my iPhone. can I buy one from a 3rd party to replace it and just countinue my monthly bill?

Yes you can. If buying secondhand, check the water-damage indicator (remove the SIM card tray and look for a dot just inside - if it's white, you're good to go but if it's pink or red the phone has water damage). Furthermore, check that it isn't stolen: http://www.protectyourdata.ca/check-the-status-of-your-device-in-canada/ Or iCloud locked: https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/ (this link only works from a PC/Mac).
