You could either unlock your phone and get a US sim card or if you contact Koodo you can ask for the $45/month US recurring add-on which I believe is unlimited talk and text. (You'd have to ask what it includes or someone here can chime in)

45$ recurring add-on for extended period of time:

  • Unlimited US to US/Canada/International text messaging
  • Unlimited US to US/Canada calling

That is what I am looking for as well.  I had it last year but cannot find it anywhere on the website so guess I have to call Koodo.  The Easy Roam gets very expensive if you use your phone every day for 4 months!

Roammobility.com has cheaper prices than Koodo. $34.95 for unlimited global text and unlimited calling in ÙS and to Canada (snowbird plan). Regular monthly plan offer the same plus 2 gbs of lte data for $39..95. Only extra cost is $10 sim, available at Staples or by mail. The sim can be used year after year by simply placing your roam account on holdwhile back in canada. Getting a separate Sim for the USA frees you to put your Koodo onseasonal hold while gone. BIG savings over anything Koodo offers, aside from my solution: koodo prepaid with USA boosters

I have a Canadian Koodo account.  I will be in the US for a month this year and 2 months next year.  Can't find a US add on for Koodo.  The best option seems to be simply switch over to Thunder Bay Tel and keep my phone number here.  Oh well.

Whenever we go to the states we use: https://roammobility.com/snowbird-plans . Check out the different plans.
Just order a sim (they are also available at alot of gas stations and convenience stores in Canada) and activate it. They step you through configuring your phone. You'll have a working phone once you step off the plane.
Of course your phone will need to be unlocked, which is free to unlock now.

@Terry, if you go this route, just remember that you will be using a new number as you will have a new sim.

If you want to hold on to your current Koodo number while using another SIM, you will also have to pay for a Koodo seasonal hold, which adds another $15 a month.

Also, putting your service on the seasonal hold plan, it's a plan change. So, you will have to pick a new in market plan when you came back.
