I have an unlocked iPhone 6 and a Koodo SIM card/phone number. I thought I could use Koodo in Canada and Tracfone in USA.

I have an unlocked iPhone 6 and a Koodo SIM card/phone number. I thought I could buy a TracFone SIM card/phone number for travel in US, and switch between the two. The TracFone SIM activated on Verizon in the US, but the signal immediately goes to "out of service" and I can't use the phone.... I am in the US now and attempting to get Tracfone to work.  Is this method supposed to work? I was told it would by an Apple salesperson, so... what is wrong or what do I need to do?

Not all canadian phones will work in the U.S regardless of being unlocked. Same as buying a U.S phone and bringing it to the U.S. Theres so many versions of the iphone worldwide its hard to know which one will work in which countries. I suggest calling apple, give them ur IMEI and S/N and see if it has the correct network capabilities to work in the U.S with that exact service provider.

This is from TracFone's webpage post... : Will unlocked phones work?
A: Maybe. Make sure that it has CDMA technology for it to work. If it has GSM, it will
not work. Honestly, unlocking is unessecary and will just increase the price of the phone.

Tracfone operates on AT&T and T-Mobile networks in addition to Verizon. I don't know what you mean by activated with Verizon as your SIM activation would be with Tracfone. Was your iPhone ever locked? If it was, a factory reset via iTunes is necessary to finalize the unlock. Your Canadian unlocked iPhone should work on any US based GSM carrier.

Lots of info here.

Did you activate on GSM?

Did you buy some time/text/data? The activation kits no longer come with some included airtime.

As a long-time snowbird, I would recommend having a separate Tracfone if your use will be extensive. Android smartphone can be had dirt cheap compared to prices in Canada. No danger of accidental roaming, and you don't have to pay $$$ to unlock your iPhone. No worries about losing very delicate nano-sims.

But there is no reason you can't so the SIM swap if that's what you want.

P.S. If you need to start over or re-register the Tracfone SIM for any reason, the activation kits are on sale at Dollar General for $1. You may have to parade up and down the aisles to find them.
