I am going away for 10 months. When I come back, will my phone number still be valid and my prepaid SIM?

No. After 90 days of non payment your line is completely de-activated. If you want to keep your number an pay less than th minimum to keep your account from deactivating (toping it up with 15 every 90 - 1 days I believe) plus no worry about missing it is losing your number, I'd suggest porting over your number to call VoIP service as it's much cheaper and you can actually still use it if you want with data service so people over here can call you and such.

Yes, either that, or port it to 7-11 Speakout for the duration of your travels. That will cost $25 for 12 months. With Koodo you would only need to top up every 120 days (it's kept for 90 days after it expires). It's your choice really which you prefer. For 10 months, cost wise it wouldn't make much of a difference. If you stay with Koodo, all your boosters will still be there, which might be a consideration too. Edit: Goran mentioned a 3rd possibility which is porting your number to a voip service, which might be a good idea if it's available in your area.

I suggest using Fongo or Textnow to port it over to because then you can still use it with your phone if you ha data services to b in touch with people back in Canada if so desired. There's others that Bobtheelectrician et al will suggest but I cannot recall if they have phone apps you can use and I fel like that would be more useful to just place and receive calls directly without any call forwarding to be done.

VoIP is voice over Internet protocol. It uses the Internet to transmit and receive calls and texts. You require a high speed connection (a couple mbps will do) so you need data service or wi-fi to make use of it. The two I mentioned just now, Fongo and Textnow are free to make a receive phone calls while Textnow is also free to text and Fongo charges 2 dollars a month for unlimited texting. You contact the carrier you want to port to, be it 7/11 or VoIP or anyone else to initiate the porting process. Your account gets closed out as part of the porting process.

To port a number, you just need to provide some informations to the company taking your number over (PIN, Phone number and the account number is sometimes necessary).

Please note that your Koodo account needs to remain active and in good standing for the whole duration of the process.
