Group Messaging/ SMS Group Chats

Last week I had my iPhone 6 replaced under warranty by Apple. Upon activating the new phone group SMS chats are no longer possible and the 'group messaging' option is no longer available.

After speaking with Apple I was told this is a carrier issue. After speaking with Koodo they had no idea.

Is this a feature that Koodo doesn't offer? If so, why have I had access to it for the last 3 years (and multiple iPhones?) If not, how can I go about activating it?

Many thanks for any help.

Do you have 'Messages' turned on in settings on your new phone?

Yes. Individual and group iMessages and individual text/sms messages work fine. Group text/sms messages go through and are received as individual messages, not as part of a group chat. And the 'group message' toggled option under Settings>Messages is no longer present. It's just not there.

On my phone, the Group Messaging option only appears when I have MMS Messaging turned on as shown in the image you linked below.

Groupe SMS sent as a groupe are only possible if all the persons in the groups have an iPhone. There's no such thing for normal SMS (green). It's an apple related feature only and it should work on iOS 9.3.3

I have spoken with Apple support (multiple times online and in store) and they have confirmed that it is a carrier choice. It is a carrier setting that removes the option for group SMS texts.

Furthermore, my US carrier iPhone (same OS as my Canadian one, but with a US carrier) has this feature/function and works the same way as with iMessage group chats.

I have had an SMS group chat, with numerous unlocked Canadian market iPhones and Koodo service for 3 years now. My confusion lies with this change occurring suddenly during my phone change.

Here is a link from Apple that shows the screenshot of the "Group Messaging" feature toggle: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204065

I have never seen this feature with Koodo nor have I been able to send group messages via green bubbles. It's surprising that it existed and didn't even know of its existence.

Timo, are you able to utilize threaded group messages?

Yes, under MMS message settings. Nobody I text on a regular basis has a data plan though, so there is little point. They won't get the messages anyway. Facebook messenger is far more convenient some it works over wifi. I'm on an s7 edge though, not an iPhone.

Actual group messaging is only possible with MMS. SMS messages lack the required protocols to specify multiple recipients so they will go through as individual messages to each person. This is not a recent change, it's the way the system was designed from the beginning. Perhaps you only recently turned off the MMS function?

So Koodo has never officially allowed this? Because SMS group messaging is certainly possible and is a iPhone function that I have been using (in the US) for the better part of a decade and here in Canada for 3 years.

I've been very happy with Koodo until now. Sadly it's time to see if any other Canadian carriers choose to support this function.

From Apple's own site: Group SMS These messages also appear in green text bubbles and go through your carrier. Group SMS messages don’t support multimedia attachments, like photos or videos. Also, when you send a Group SMS, all responses are sent as individual text messages and the recipients can’t see the other responses from the group. It's a simplified way of sending the same text to multiple people, but it's not a true group message. Each person receives their own separate sms message from your number, and each response chain will appear in its own thread.

J., you've been using group MMS, not group SMS. MMS is needed to send message header data that allows everyone's device in the group to properly thread the conversation.

iOS uses the green colour-coding for both SMS and MMS.

Edit: I see what you're talking about after seeing Timo's response. So it's just a method of sending bulk SMS. Not particularly great for group discussion.

I apologize if I have been using the incorrect terminology. Semantics can be quite important with discussions like these.

Would my question be more accurately phrased as: does Koodo support threaded text conversations between iPhone and non-iPhone users?

It seems like they do not and that my having such a function was an abberation.

They do, but only if you are using MMS. This is the same for all carriers everywhere, as the SMS protocol does not support this feature.

Do you have a "group message" option in the second toggle field under settings>general on your iPhone?

You are missing it as well. It is that setting that enables non-iPhone group threads.

I have the same issue with my iphone se. MMS is enabled but no group messaging option appears. This causes group texts to be sent out as individual texts, and responses to not come back as a group but individually. I would like to follow up with this. I know from searching other forums that Koodo has said "group messaging will not work on Koodo, only through the iphone if all members of the group have imessage. However I'm sure a lot of us would really appreciate it if Koodo could work to unlock this feature. I know my friend is with telus and group messaging works properly for him on his iphone. Also please see this recent thread from fido http://forums.fido.ca/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/NonTechnical/thread-id/11243/page/3 They had the exact same issue and were able to resolve it. So again we would really appreciate it if you could at least look into it. Thanks.
Group MMS does work on Koodo.  I've got a galaxy s5 on Koodo and tested this out with an MTS galaxy s5, a Telus iphone 5se, and a Rogers iphone 6.  On android, need to go into "advanced settings" and select the setting for "group mms" rather than "mass text."  And on the iPhone, need to have the "group messaging" setting turned on.  Not sure why the setting is disabled on koodo iPhones but koodo Androids can do group MMS just fine.

Maria, this your third post about this. The op has an iphone with koodo which is not something you have tested out. I appreciate how excited you are to share this information but there is no need to revive multiple old threads with information that only half pertains to the op.
Well I'm trying to help out through multiple threads since the original poster of this thread may not see the other posts.  It would be great if koodo could somehow combine threads of similar topics.

You're right, I didn't test with a koodo iPhone, but did with a Telus iPhone, and as well all know, koodo is a Telus brand.  Similarly group mms works on koodo Androids.  While this information only half pertains, it helps the thread understand where the issue may lie.  Koodo is not the issue, it is Apple.
