data usage on iPhone 5s

I'm confused about data usage. I bought an iPhone 5s with Koodo's Canada-wide Talk + Text ($50/month). It looks like it includes "unlimited messaging" but I have to turn on Cellular on the iPhone and the data usage goes up when I text. Is this part of the "pay-per-use data saver"? Am I going to be charged for the data I use when texting/using the Messages app on the iPhone?

1. When going on settings there is a new option for you to restrict which apps will use cellular data or not. You can have data TURNED ON and use picture messaging without actually incurring with extra charges. 2. For outgoing picture messages originating from Canada, additional data may apply depending on the picture size: 3$/MB US and 25$/MB International. Make sure that the pictures you are sending are less than 3MB and you will be okay. Hope this answers your question!!

Yes you will from what you're explaining there, especially if you have iMessage turned on. iMessage always requires a data connection (you'll know because of blue speech bubbles). That being said you can limit this a few ways. First under settings -> cellular you can disable all your apps (individually) from using cellular data restricting it to just system services. Seccondly you can connect to wifi before turning your cellular data off ensuring that all outgoing data (other than your picture message) goes through wifi. This will avoid the charge. Basically SMS/MMS you will not be charged for, any other data you will be charged for.

Thanks, Jorden. That's helpful. Just to be clear, is "unlimited messaging" included in my plan? Am I reading that incorrectly?

Unlimited texting is included with any plan

You do have "unlimited text messaging". So if you want, you could always turn off your data which will restrict you from sending picture/video messages and using iMessage. You will only be able to send normal texts (green) and only access internet applications when there is WiFi available.

While the other guys covered it, you asked and I'll answer 🙂. Unlimited messaging is just referring to SMS/MMS (which is the green bubbles), those are what's included. Anything above/beyond that is extra.

You can control what apps get access to your mobile data connection under Settings > Mobile. If you want to send MMS without additional data charges, you need to disable iMessage in Settings > Messages.
Text Messaging is included on al new plans, if you have to turn on DATA to send or receive one, then you're using IMESSAGE not SMS. The Canada-wide Talk + Text ($50/month) does not include data which is required to send IMESSAGE, keep in mind that if you use DATA you will be charged pay-per-use as follow 1 Up to 25 KB $50 $5/MB 2 More than 25 KB to 25 MB $5 N/A $55 3 More than 25 MB to 100 MB $10 N/A $60 4 More than 100 MB to 250 MB $15 N/A $65 5 More than 250 MB $15 $5/250 MB $65 + data overage charges

Jonathan, that's not entirely correct. Data is required for both MMS and iMessage. The data used for MMS is not subject to any additional charges nor does it count against your data allowance. Data used for iMessage does count, which is why I suggested disabling iMessage as a way to control mobile data usage.

True indeed, but my answer was in response to his quotation and question, he especifically stated "TEXT"(SMS) not "PICTURE MESSAGING"(MMS)

But you stated that anytime data has to be turned on, he is using iMessage. That was the incorrect part. MMS is a part of the unlimited messaging feature, which is why I brought it up.
