Data Usage Discrepency on iPhone vs Koodo's Tracking

I've suspected this for awhile and finally tried it out this month. I have 5 GB of data with my plan and always seem to run out by the end of the month. That's a lot of data to go through, especially when I can find wifi almost everywhere. This month I reset my iPhone's cellular data stats at the same time as my new billing cycle. I proof with the iPhone stats that I have only used 3.6 GB of data, and yet I just received the text from Koodo saying my data has been turned off because I used 100% of my data. Has anyone else been tracking their usage and found this?

My experience is most Canadian telecoms are pretty good with accurate data tracking. That's usually more of an American problem of telecoms using faulty data tracking on purpose. I'm trying to think of what would consistently cause this. I'm not sure if the iPhone data tracker takes into account when Wi-Fi assist switches to cellular data to 'improved' your wi-fi signal. Is wi-fi assist turned off for you?
Thanks for the reply. I do have wifi assist and background app refresh both turned off.

Hello Janelle, I have never found out that difference. It's always been pretty much on point with Koodo's counter. Maybe you restored your phone and reset the counter on your phone?

Okay thanks for weighing in. I wanted to get an understanding if this is only happening with my stats or if others have had this too before I call a rep. I haven't restored my phone, just reset the data stats on the morning of new billing cycle.

My plan started on December 1st and apparently I've used a whole GB by Dec 6. I am unemployed and don't leave the house much and have wifi

Are you reading this on your phone or via self serve? If on your phone then login to self serve and see what that says. On the iPhone, your data usage has to be reset manually each month to keep accurate results. On Android you need to properly set the dates to match your billing cycle.

If you indeed used 1GB of data, I would check to make sure wifi assist is turned off in your settings (this helps weak wifi signals by using wifi and data at the same time)

Even 3.6 GB of data is a lot, if you can find and then use Wi-Fi everywhere. I recommend reviewing your App related consumption to see if something jumps out. Also be sure you are indeed resetting your phone at the same time as Koodo does.

Yup it's a fair bit. I consult for social media marketing part time, so it's important that the stats are accurate. I believe their data cycle resets at midnight on the day your bill is due. I reset it the following morning as the new bill cycle rolled over, should've been an accurate test. I took your advice and reviewed the app data usage, and Instagram sticks out with 2.1 GB and everything else is a hundred MB or less. That's a helpful point to mention when I call the rep tomorrow to try to sort this. Thanks everyone!

Therein may lie your problem. My payment is due 3 weeks after the end of the billing period. Thus there is a week (more or less) difference between the two. This also matches your consumption description 3.6 GB is about three-quarters of 5GB. Review your PDF bill more closely to determine your actual billing period vs. your payment date.

The CSR will have no ability to determine which app is using data.

I hear what you're saying, but my payment date is a different date entirely. I'm just tracking my billing cycle. See these texts for reference. Yesterday it was cut off and today I received this text. My payment will be automatically made in a couple weeks.

So, your billing cycle is 11th of the month to 10th of the next month.
Did you set your data cycle on your phone  same period?

Yes I did. The billing cycle date starts on the 11th and ends on the 10th. The same as when data usage monitoring starts and ends. Thanks again Koodo community! I just wanted to know if this was a common problem, and how it had been handled in the past.

Do you have a screen shot of when the data was reset?

My experience with my iphone is that is that it can be off by 100MB or so.  In your case it is off by a lot.

When was the last time your restarted your phone?  Have you tried to reset the network settings (note that wifi passwords will be lost)?
I am also noticing the same problem. From my iPhone 5s tracking, I have used 810MB of my 1G but the koodo site says I've used 935MB. I was also using US roaming data recently and according to my phone I used up 425MB and Koodo says I've used 453MB. The difference seems small, but can add up. I wish there was a reason for the difference or a way we could track it better. Right now it feels like Koodo is taking advantage.

Well with the iPhone you have to manually reset the data counter. Are you sure you are resetting it on the date your data resets? The Koodo website is the most reliable way to track and apart from a little delay (a few minutes), is the most accurate you will get.
