Data usage - data being used on wifi


I got a message saying I had used 50% of my data so I double checked that I was in fact on wifi (I was) and that wifi assist was off (it was). I set my phone down and was not touching it until I heard a message come in, it said I had used 90% of my data. Double checked my router log and I was not disconnected from wifi during that time frame (approx 1/2 hour) and apparently I used 1.5 GB within that time while not touching the phone. Why is my data being sucked up so quickly when the phone is connected to wifi, assist is off and I'm not even touching it? iPhone SE 3GB data plan Used 40% of my data in 30-40 mins (plus a bunch before I started getting warnings) without touching my phone Wifi on and not disconnected

I specified in my post that wifi assist was off. I always have it off, but I double checked when I got the first message that it was in fact off.

Have a look in Settings > Cellular, and you can see which apps are using cellular data. You can also reset it to zero to watch for current consumption.

If you were indeed connected to Wi-Fi, there is no way Koodo would have any knowledge of the data you used, and therefore no consumption or warnings. Somehow, your phone began consuming cellular data.  

What does your Settings tool say?

Unfortunately I have not reset the stats since I got the phone a few months ago, but I didn't notice any large jumps in the consumption numbers. Either way with wifi assist off it shouldn't have used any data. Is this an apple issue where it is mistakenly using the LTE connection when it shouldn't be, or a Koodo issue that is billing me for data I didn't use? I have cellular data turned off for now so that I don't go over, but it really sucks that I can't use any of my data for the next couple of weeks.

Yes, it will use data with Wi-Fi Assist turned off, if either the Wi-Fi signal drops enough, or the phone's Wi-Fi radio shuts off. Normally the phone's Wi-Fi radio turns off once the phone has been idle for some time. If you've consumed 3 GB in two weeks, and claim this is an unusual volume of Data, then the anomaly should show in your Carrier Settings, even if you have not reset recently.

If you haven't reset your Settings > Cellular consumption, you should do so, so you can see what happens in the future.
