Calling Thailand from Canada with a Calling Card

My Girlfriend recently moved to Thailand and I'm trying to figure out the best way to call her. My question is this: if my plan allows for 50 anytime minutes, and I use a calling card and make a 40 minute call, does this use up my anytime minutes? If I were to upgrade to unlimited minutes, could I use the calling card to get LD at the rate on the card? Also, I noticed there are unlimited LD plans for US/China/Other places. Would Thailand fall under any of these plans? Thanks, Cameron

Oh and one more thing - if my girlfriend calls me from Thailand, does that count as LD rate on my end? Or does it just use up my minutes?

Receiving a call from Thailand is the treated the same as receiving a call from Canada.

Yes a calling card will use your anytime minutes. If you get unlimited minutes you can call the calling card. The calling card call will be considered a normal call (to a local number or 1800 number). The long distance rate will be whatever you bought the calling card for Unfortunately there is no Thailand LD plan
Thank you very much. Do you happen to know if my girlfriend calls me (assuming I have unlimited minutes) if I get stuck with a LD rate?

Nope.
Thank you so much Dennis! Just to be clear, if I have unlimited minutes, and my girlfriend calls me, its no problem? (We'll just split the cost of her LD rates, she gets good ones)

If you have a Canada wide plan with unlimited minutes and as long as you are receiving the call in Canada, there will be no long distance charges

If you are happy with your plan, you could also consider adding a $10 unlimited incoming add-on on your end, Cameron. That way she can call you for her great rate, and you receive her calls without biting into your 50 minute allotment 🙂 Lots of options for you!
Lol seriously thanks a ton. There's a thousand kinks to work out trying to sort out a long distance relationship around the world, it's nice to have this cleared up. Have a great day 🙂

You're right. Using a local access number to use your calling card will have no additional charge.
If you have unlimited, you will be fine.

They said you will be charged airtime minutes.
But you have unlimited airtime so you are fine.

If she has internet at her end (and who doesn't nowadays), you can always set her up with a MagicJack account with a Canadian number. That way she can call you for free and you can call her long distance free. It also has apps for smartphones so when she's out and about, with a data plan, you can reach her. One more thing to keep in mind: although Koodo provides free international texting and mms, the Thai providers probably don't. You may want to consider getting Viber (has calls and texting free via smartphone app & data/WiFi), or countless other apps for texting like WhatsApp and BBM. BTW, looks like you're in university, so you can use the campus' free WiFi and save your data while using the apps, but keep your charger with you as WiFi really eats up the phone's juice!
