Being charged for data usage while connected to wifi

Userlevel 1
I was on Facetime on my phone last night, while in my home and connected to wifi. I was still charged for data usage and now I'm over my monthly limit. I am absolutely certain that I was connected to wifi the whole time. Also I've been noticed data charges occuring overnight while I'm sleeping at home and once again connected to wifi. I had 300mb of data a month on my plan at my previous cell phone company, and never had trouble staying under that limit. Since I've switched to Koodo I've went over my 300mb data limit almost every month without changing my phone habits. What's happening?

You must have some apps running in the background that uses data whether it's overnight or other times. Even a weather app once opened and not closed updates automatically frequently. Connecting to wi-fi is ok but not guaranteed your phone won't connect to the network for stronger signals. Shut off data completely on your phone when in wi-fi to avoid possible leakage.

good point! To prevent that goto wifi settings and choose advanced. Set the wifi sleep policy to never!

iPhnes dont have a wifi sleep policy. When an iphone is asleep and not connect to a power source, it will turn off wifi sometimes to save battery

I have my WiFi set to never sleep, but still received charges@5 AM when I was sleeping. Only thing running was my alarm scheduled@6 AM.

Sounds like an android. Does the data usage graph confirm that no data was used at that time?

Thanks, I've turned off cellular data to prevent this from happening again

Good! Just remember that you need to turn it back on if you want to send picture messages to someone.

[b]For iPhone: phone using cell data while supposedly connected to wifi https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4348072?start=0&tstart=0 The problem seems to span several different models of phone and iOS versions (page 5 of thread). There are 1180+ posts going back to 2012. First post suggested there may be a problem with LTE, but no real follow-up. Résumé by Lawrence Finch (Jan. 2015) on page 79 seems to be: If the phone is asleep WiFi is turned off. If the phone is asleep there are still apps that run in background and can use data. If the phone is asleep and there are apps that use data they will use cellular data, not WiFi. Others have reported that the iPhone will prefer a stronger cell connection over a weak wifi. So the band-aid would seem to be: keep the phone plugged in at night. Set the sleep policy to never. Turn off cellular data when you don't need it. This seems to be a reoccurring issue with iPhones. I don't have this issue because I have a widget on my home screen to toggle my data off when I get home. Done. No data leakage. I also have 6GB and rarely use above 2 so I do have a large buffer though.

Please share the name of the widget for iPhone so that this conversation is pretty well complete. On the Android side, the farproc widget does a great job. My leakage is Ø. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.data.enabler
Hey all, I have the EXACT same issue. Today, while home on Wi-Fi, no apps open, etc... I somehow used over 600mb of data?! I'm now over my 2GB limit. Sorry Koodo, but I am not going to pay for something I didn't even use. It is in the 20mb packets (so say's the usage site here) Good news is I only have 2 days till my next cycle, but this has happened before to me. Apple needs to address this issue and fast. Normally I only use around 80% of my data per month, but when this "error" happens, it causes me to go around 110% on the months it does happen.

Settings>Cellular Find out here which app is using your data and you can disable data use for that app Settings>iTunes & App Store Turn off Use cellular data for automatic downloads and turn off auomatic downloads I believe that a customer is responsible for their devices and the settings within it. If your device used the service without your knowledge then it is not the service provider's fault. It is the fault of the device. Your complaints for re-inbursement should come from them. Just not paying your bill is not the answer and poor financial responsibility that ends up only hurting yourself

I understand and respect what you are saying, Denis, but I do not think you understood me, and none of the apps used the data. Apparently it is a problem with IOS. I phoned Koodo and they took all of the charges off my bill. Luckily my bill ends today so my data is reset tomorrow, but I still stand what I said before: if you don't use the data it is the consumers right to phone and get their money. It is a phone the company sells you and it is part of their responsibility to help the customer in regards to these sorts of problems. I was lucky and got my money back, etc... And I encorage anyone in the same situation to do the same, just remember to be polite and use common sense 😉

You got a screen shot to show none of your apps used any data? I have never had this issue with iOS. If data was used it would show which app used it. My cellular data usage amount on my iphone for the current period would always match Koodo's data usage amount (+/- a couple MB). If anything, iOS 8 has great control to disable any single app from using cellular data. Even Android doesnt come with that
And I agree it mostly matches Koodo and they both do a great job, just when this happens it can be very... well... Annoying. i'll send you an update in a few days after experimenting a bit 🙂
