Transfer Bell Blackberry Passport to Koodo

I have a 2-year-old Blackberry Passport that is still in good shape. I am currently with Bell. I'd like to transfer to Koodo with my existing phone because the rates are better for better service. What do I need to do to get this done?
1) Do I need to unlock the phone? where to get it unlocked etc.
2) Is a new SIM card required?
3) Internation Long Distance Minutes: Does this feature apply to only the countries listed? What about calls to the USA?

As a small independent business owner located in Hamilton. Are there any other features or considerations I need to review? I travel to the US infrequently i.e. 1x per year, but I call there often.

Thanks!

John

1. Yes. I personally suggest anyone with a very good feedback rating on eBay but any reputable third party unlocker will be cheaper than from presumably Bell. 2. Yes since you're moving to a different carrier. 3. Yes only to listed countries. Us calls have their own per minute rate and maybe add-ons.

Oh and do make sure to get referred by someone you know who is with Koodo so the both of you get 25 bucks each.
Thank-you Goran! That referral bonus will help cover the unlocking fee. I'll probably ask at the Koodo store in Hamilton to see if they can do it.

The Koodo store is obligated to forward you to Koodo CSR for unlocking who will state that they do not unlock phones from other carriers. Your best bet is one of the online unlock companies as Goran suggested.

You can ask Bell to unlock it, but I believe they charge $50 for the process.

Whereas the going rate on Ebay for Bell Passport codes is 10-12 dollars.

Oh and do make sure whomever refers you as well as you follow the steps exactly for referring. Koodo will not correct it if you or the other person screws up somewhere and you sign up without the process done correctly.

If you're a frequent traveler to the USA and since now your passport will be unlocked, you should consider a us prepaid carrier. I use cricket. It's a low cost arm of AT&T (sort of like Koodo is the lowest cost arm of Telus). Switching Sims at the border is simple.

With some of Crickets plans you can call Canada and with one of them you can even roam in Canada.
