OS Update Schedule

Badge +4
Over the past few months, I've been noticing several threads pertaining to the Android Jelly Bean update. The question has been asked repeatedly and the answer is repeated over and over again. I'm proposing that a table similar to that of Telus be implemented so that people can quickly view the progress of software updates for their particular device at a glance. This would encompass all OS platforms much like the Telus example below, only do it up in Koodo colours.

I love this idea Rikkster, it might slow down the repetitive questions, still at the same time I've noticed other places around the Web that ppl get even more upset if an update gets pushed back when they are posted like this. Some ppl are never happy but I think the having one out weighs the not for sure.

Ok, do you guys think that there is a large number of folks that care about this? I know that we do. But in reality the masses only care about it when the carriers push a message to them saying it's available for an update. Just like any other software. I'm not actively looking for new releases of any of my software that sits on my computer. Thoughts?

Actually the majority of ppl now do care about updates and more each and every day. Even the ppl I know that know nothing really about mobile devices always ask me if their phone is suppose to get this Jelly Bean thing or update that brings Google Now ect. More and more ppl are really getting into their devices and the updates and features that come with these updates so ya I'd say it's a large ever growing issue.

Why would they care? Unless, there is a major bug that a new update would fix why would people salivate about this? In my circle of friends this is never really brought up. And they are not luddites. 🙂

One only need look at the thread with over forty replies about the s2x update schedule to see that people care. People want the latest and greatest even if they have no idea why.

RoryC It's because of the features it brings with some updates that make ppl want updates. Look at the Galaxy S2 it's going to be like a brand new phone when it get its Jelly Bean update, you have a brand new UI you have Google Now you have project butter and more, it's going to breath some new life into an aging phone. When ppl can't afford a new phone yet and you get an update that makes it like a brand new device what's not to get excited about.

Problem is though that OEM's don't always make their targets on time so then blame would be put onto the carrier as well when it's really more in the hands of the OEM.

The other thread. http://community.koodomobile.com/koodo/topics/galaxy_s2x_t989d_android_4_1_jelly_bean

That's the original thread with the 172 replies. Someone cleaned it up bringing the number down to 45 replies, but I have seen other threads pertaining to the same subject. You can find the example when you do a topic search for jelly bean and look for the number of replies. When you click on the respective link it brings you back to the page with 45 replies. Spring cleaning maybe?

I agree with Cory to the extent that not everyone spends every waking minute pondering about software release dates for their Android, iOS, BlackBerry or Window's Phone. On the other hand, TELUS seems to think that a software update schedule benefits its customers, so I see no reason why Koodo shouldn't follow suit. It's a lot easier to implement an OS update schedule than it is to answer a hundred + questions that essentially receive the same reply. Kid Android makes several valid points as to the legitimacy of upgrading, citing new features and a better user experience overall. The problem with Android (and it may be prevalent with other OS platforms), is that when an Android OS upgrade is rumoured to be released, it sets off rampant waves of speculation. I completely understand that all operating systems must undergo rigorous testing before being offered globally/nationally and delays will happen. However, since the onus is on the carrier (in part) to release the upgrade, it would seem only fitting that they provide some form of notification to their customers as to the progress and eventual release dates of these software upgrades, even if it's only an estimate, at least the customer has some indication. For Galaxy S2x owners, this will be a tethered upgrade and not over-the-air. It's really anyone's guess as to how Koodo will notify us of the upgrade. At this point the only way to see if the JB 4.1 upgrade is available is to use a desktop client (Samsung Kies). Again, implementing a visual description of OS updates in the form of a schedule that spans all platforms, would be beneficial to both Koodo and its respected customers alike.

Ok, well I'll bring this idea back to the forefront...

Yes it doesn't matter what provider your on like most phones, you'll get the updates as soon as Google releases them it's the main advantage to buying a Nexus phone.
