I just want to unlock a Koodo phone, but apparently it can't be done since the account hasn't been used in over 90 days.


I don't have much experience with such things (in fact, I didn't even know phones could be locked to one carrier until recently - how stupid), but basically I had some friends round me up some old Blackberries that still work, as a back-up for when mine finally crapped out. I've been holding onto this small pile of Blackberries for probably over a year, and my phone has finally stopped working (I'm with Rogers - no contract, but I only pay $20 a month and am pretty happy with this arrangement). I went through and have decided that this one phone is the best option, and it is locked to Koodo. I called the helpline to see if they would unlock it for me, but the guy on the phone asked if I had used "my account" in the past 90 days - I told him that it wasn't my account, it's just an old phone that used to belong to someone else, but it's been hanging out inactive in my possession for over a year. But apparently this means the phone is now impossible to unlock? None of the back-up phones in my possession have been active in the last 90 days (not all of them are with Koodo, this is just the one that is in the best condition), so does this mean I won't be able to unlock any of these phones? 

I'm just confused and sure would like to be able to use a cell phone that works, especially one that I already have in my possession.

Try a third party unlock service to see if they can help you. There are a number on eBay, and more can be found in a web search. There are also a number of recommendations in these fora, which you can search using the tools at the top of the screen.

I replied basically the same thing to the other person who had commented, but I just worry that if the carrier says it "can't" be unlocked now, should I really pay an unlocking service if they won't be able to do it either? Or Koodo is just saying THEY can't unlock it anymore? The guy on the phone was totally unclear about any of this. I worry also about finding a reliable 3rd party service (if it turns out this will work), because all of the ones I've researched have had pretty mixed reviews 😞. What a pain, hey. Thank you for your advice 🙂

Koodo "can't" unlock your phone as in "you are no longer a customer and there is no way to bill you".

Usually eBay offers reliable 3rd party service with money back guarantee, so do renowned websites such as cellunlocker.net or unlockbox.ca. If you find another service, you can always ask the opinion of this community if people have experience with that particular service.

The 90-day unlock 'stipulation' is simply put in place to deter customers from switching to another carrier. There's nothing written where you'll be penalized for unlocking your phone earlier than the 90-day rule. Most third party unlock services offer a 100% money back guarantee if an unlock code cannot be found for your phone. Cellunlocker.net worked well for the six phones I've had to get unlocked over the years. http://www.cellunlocker.net/

I like first-hand reviews about such things, thank you. I was reading reviews online about cellunlocker (that's the website the guy at Rogers suggested I use, too) and some people were saying they never got the code sent to them and did not get a refund. I also read that you have to film the unlocking attempt in order to get a refund, so maybe some of the people who were complaining didn't do this? I appreciate the advice, and I will likely end up trying that site if I have to use a 3rd party unlocking service. Thanks! :)

Oh, and to Sophia, (sorry I thought I could reply to each comment separately) that makes so much sense that the 90 day policy exists because I'm not a customer of theirs anymore so they wouldn't be able to bill me. Thanks for clearing that up; kind of wish the guy I spoke to who worked for Koodo had been as helpful! :p

I too have never purchased an unlock code that did not work, though in one or two cases I needed additional instructions (Samsung phones tended to be a bit odd in the past).

If you make triple sure the model number and IMEI code are correct when you purchase the unlock, I see no reason why it wouldn't work for you. Just pick the cheapest service you can find out of the suggestions offered in this thread 🙂

Hi Catherine, I just joined Koodo from Bell and ported my Blackberry over from Bell. I used Unlockforce.com and they provided an unlock code once I sent over the IMEI code. The cost was about $11 CAD and the instructions you can find on the Crackberry website or on Youtube. Very simple. Like the others said, just make triple sure you have the correct IMEI number (again, to get the IMEI number,  google this and the instructions are very easy to follow). My regular wireless phone repair shop would have done it for $35 also but it's fairly straightforward so I decided to do it myself and all went well.

Thank you again Sophia, I suppose I will look around for a trustworthy website to use and just be extra careful to make sure I have all the right info. And thank you too John Stockton, I'll look into your website. I like that you used it with a Blackberry and had success, and that it was only about $11, I can definitely deal with that. It's funny, I went into my local repair-shop and they wouldn't (couldn't?) do it for me! I think I'd be willing to pay a little bit extra if I could see a person do it, rather than having to use my credit card and wait for a website to send me a code, you know? Maybe that's just me 🙂 but I'll look into some sites, thanks guys!

I know about the other unlocking services, and I researched cellunlocker and it had pretty mixed reviews which worried me a bit. I'm just worried that if the carrier says it "can't" be unlocked, I don't want to fork over $25 to a website who won't be able to unlock it either, ya know? Thank you for the advice though, I appreciate it!
