Blackberry Q5- Does it connect to wifi easily, don't need a data plan?

I'm considering buying this phone outright. I wanted to know if this phone will connect to wifi (home, public wifi etc) without needing a data plan? I know the old blackberries you needed a data plan to hook up to wifi or something like that. Basically I don't need data. I really want to use this phone for talk, text and wifi at home or in public to check map, bus schedule etc. Any problems with connectivity? I have a Linksys router at home. Thanks!
