canada to usa text charge

Jay Troms

In the past 4 months I’ve been continuously charged for roaming fees without having left the country. Koodo must’ve done something different with their networks or satellites because I’ve been with them for 3 years and I’ve never been charged and now it happens on each monthly bill.

When these charges occur I’m actually further North in Canada and working or hiking in the bush. When I get a text it states welcome to the USA via AT&T.  Although it’s only a 45 cent charge, if not dealt with it’ll continue. It frustrates me to have to deal with this because, lately, each month there seems to be an additional charge on my account for no reason. I knew when I got the text that I ought to take a screen shot because it would likely show up again on this month’s bill.

I followed the directions from the Koodo rep on how to set up my phone so as to avoid this in the future but here I am again.

If you’re getting USA roaming texts and charges while physically in Canada (especially near or north of the border), your phone is likely connecting to a US tower accidentally. To stop this, disable data roaming and manually select the Koodo network in your phone’s settings. Consider switching to a Canada-US plan which includes roaming in the USA at no extra cost, eliminating these charges altogether.

Hi @Jay Troms

We  have looked into it and we can see there was a $0.45 charge on the last bill.

If this is the charge you are referring to, this is not for accidental roaming but ffor texts sent from Canada to US/International, which is not included withyour current plan.

You can check the availble perks in self serve if you plan on using this feature regularly.

The charge shouldn’t be there because I was still in my city and I was texting my neighbour while out on a hike. The phone connected to an AT&T tower from Canada. This is getting ridiculous!

@Jay Troms

We would like to confirm that the charges on the last bill are not roaming charges, they were triggered for texts sent from Canada (the phone was connected to a Canadian tower) to a non-Canadian number.

We recommend checking in self serve the usage section for more details. We can also send you a PM with more info about those texts, please let us know.

Is your neighbor using an US number? and does your plan had the perk to send free international SMS?
