why would a phone suddenly (only one day) use data at home with wifi turned on?

our cells phones do not have a data plan, Network Settings/Use packet data is OFF, and we normally use Wifi at home. One day only, one our phones incurred data usage 12 times throughout the day. I don't understand how this happened and would like to prevent it in the future.

Was their an update and your settings reset? You can add a data block to your account. Note that with a Data block your picture messaging wont work

I don't think there was an update but I don't know since this happened a month ago - I just saw the charges on my bill today.

As long as data is turned off then you're generally safe but it sounds like a weather app, widget, or your phone checking for a software update. Depending on the phone you have, go to Settings and then Data usage. Here you'll see the offending apps and that will narrow it down. Also ensure auto-sync is turned off (should be in the same general menu area)
Wifi connection may have dropped.
but this happened when we were home and our house Wifi was on... the phone should have just used it as it normally does. We have 2 cell phones and only one incurred data usage.

As a power saving feature, some cell phones drop the wifi connection when the phone is not plugged in. Happens all the time with the iphone

with data turned off on the phone, it should have just given a message like 'no connection'

Really weird. Can't find a valid explication to this. If data is indeed turned off, then it is really weird your phone has used data. How much data are we talking about? When was the data used ? (you can check this on your e-bill!)

I have the same thing just happened on the 18th of March, and noted it today, and it had used 31.64 MB of data which now will cost me 16.24 for nothing!!!! We deliberately have never had a data plan on this phone, LG-P500H, where do I find this data block to ensure this does not happen again

You have to call into Koodo and request a data block (there is no fee to call into Koodo to do this for you)

also to add, if you request a data block, you won't be able to send or receive mms.
according to the Koodo representative: "The only two possibilities are: 1. The data service was turned on accidentally since the morning around 9:45 am and it was turned off until 6:30 pm. 2. The phone was reset to default settings either by removing the battery or doing it manually. " Well, since I've no way of proving #1 and I know the phone was not reset, I guess I'll never know. I am fortunate the data charge is very low, I just want to prevent any future charges. Does anyone have Battery Doctor app on their phone? This app was installed around the same time, I wish I knew how to see exactly when, as that might coincide with these data charges. The phone still should have only used our home Wifi though.
