Why am I getting charged $5 for using 5mb of data(BY ACCIDENT) when the plan charges $5/50mb.

I'm not a data user so I went with the cheapest plan possible (29$/mth) which requires me to pay $5 for every 50 mb of data I use with my first smartphone(Blackberry) because that's all they sell these days. So I tried turning my data services off on my BB, but somehow it still logs small amounts of data on my account, and the worst part is, in my first month, I had to pay $5 for using 5mb of data by accident! I thought it was $5 for every 50 mb or do I get charged $5 the moment I accidentally use 1 mb of data. Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this issue? Thank you!

You are being charged $5 in advance to give you access to the 50MB, the system does not divide this cost. You can call Koodo to add a data block, but your picture and other multimedia messaging services will not work with data disabled.

Thanks a lot for the quick response! So basically if I accidentally click on Gmail or even the Blackberry Hub which grabs my mail and my data is turned on, I'll get charged the full $5? That's probably going to happen every month... I guess I'll have to ask for a data block, but then I won't have picture sending/receiving capabilities on my Smartphone which is ironic, because my simple Nokia phone with Koodoo could send pictures without this data nonsense, And now they've removed so many regular phones from their stores. The strange thing is, my girlfriend has a Blackberry curve from 2 years ago and she can send pictures from her phone even though her phone doesn't allow her to use data! Could this just be an old plan or an old feature for that model? p.s. somehow as technology advances, there are more options but they phase out the simpler options that people have enjoyed for so long

That is an unfortunate limitation of the technology your phone is based on. I still use an old Samsung flip phone but I'm starting to see the advantage of smartphone cameras (de resolution eet iz so low!). But with higher resolution comes the cost of requiring a data connection to send. Your plan, however, does include 250 MB for accidental usage and OS updates, that should cover you if you keep data services turned off until you try to send a picture then disable it right away. Doing this while connected to wifi also helps reduce risk.

Ah, nice to talk to an oldphone user. Yes the resolution is very low, but at least it can send! Woah, where do I find information about this accidental usage coverage, was this stated in some fine print? I've been trying to do the method of keeping it turned off until I need to send a picture, the downside is that I can't receive entire picture messages if nobody notifies me first. Thanks again for your help!

It's not 250 MB, it's 250 KB that you are initially covered for.

To add, your girlfriend's BlackBerry uses a different internet access protocol. If she had a BB10 device like the Q5, she would be in the same boat as you.

Ah I see, different protocol, sounds like a better protocol. Thanks a lot for the information everyone, I guess the solution is just for me to turn off my data services and be careful whenever I want to send pictures.

If she has a plan that allow her to use BBM, she has access to data, which is why she can use picture messaging. All data on older model BB phones ran through RIM servers, which allows them to control what you can access.
That’s what I do: I drink and I know things.
