US Roaming Charges while physically present in Canada

I am currently in Abbotsford BC Canada and got a text message from Kooko mobile "Welcoming me to the US and offering roaming and call rates for the US". Could I get US roaming charges when I am in Canada and using my phone in Canada just because I am immediately across the border from the US? If so, how do I prevent this. I have currently placed my phone on Airplane mode.

Yes, you would attract roaming costs when connected to a USA based cellular site. Radio waves do not respect the international border. You can change the carrier settings on your phone from Automatic to Koodo: iPhone: Settings > Carrier > turn off automatic and choose Koodo from the options which will populate in a few minutes Android: (From Chad Burr 5 months ago) Settings... Connections... Wireless and networks.. Network selection Set to manual Allow the phone to scab which can take up to 2 minutes Choose telus or koodo Keep in mind this disables roaming so if you actually want to roam, put network selection back to ahtomatic.

I live/work near the US border. Manually choosing Koodo or Telus as the carrier will keep your phone alive and do no $$$ harm near or away from the border. Sometime US signals near the border are stronger than the Canadian ones. That text message is a good heads up.

Update for Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop): Goto Settings > Mobile networks > Network operators allow to scan, and then choose Telus or Koodo
