Start accepting Visa Debit

Userlevel 1
If they accepted visa debit as payment it would be so easy to pay bills on time instead of having to buy prepaid visa cards and buying a $75 card for a $45 bill because of pending charges. Some customers aren't old or responsible enough to have a credit card.

You can pay your bills with debit if you like you just need to sign up for the banks online banking and add koodo as a bill.

true, but it's handy to be able to slap money on your account instantly. I really don't understand the slow adoption of visa debit in Canada. it's my usual method for online purchases, followed by PayPal. For some reason there's a lot of Canadian retailers that take neither, and because of this iI end up ordering my stuff from the states. it's a little retarded.

I agree with this. I can't order a phone from the web store because my only source of a payment card is Visa Debit. I don't want to try with a prepaid because there's no guarantee it'll work with Koodo.

Valid point everyone! I too have noticed that Canada has been slow to adopt this new technology. Hopefully as the demand rises, our need to change over our systems will too. I'm sure you're all aware of the many ways to pay your bills or purchase phones so I won't bore you with all of that. Thanks for making us aware that there is an interest in Visa debit cards, keep the ideas flowing everyone!

Fully agree, I think she looks amazing here. Much better then the superficial, barbie doll, painted on face look that most of the celebs do these days
Its time for koodo to accept visa debit. Its the same thing as visa except the funds comes straight out of the account instead of getting a bill in the mail. I'm sure TD hasn't adopted it with koodo

To my knowledge the Candian government may be revoking Visa debit entirely as non-constitutional anyway.

Oh that's rich. What's their argument for it being non-constitutional? Gotta love when the government dictates how you can spend your own money and via what channels you're allowed to use in order to facilitate your own purchases.

Something about the money that Interac (a Canadian company) is supposed to make via debit transactions is getting sent to Visa instead (an American/international company) I don't know if it's going through yet though.

Interesting. Sounds like a protectionist strategy to benefit a Canadian company. Not sure why interac should be entitled to processing fees when their service isn't being used. It's almost as if the government is committed to guaranteeing interac a monopoly on all debit purchases in this country. Very interesting and odd indeed.

I've also heard that Candian businesses in general (particularly small ones) are calling for the closure of Visa debit services in Canada because on their end the payment is processed as a Visa payment which involves higher service charges than interac.

I could really see that as my wife's family business let me see how much these charged are and it's quite ridiculous IMO how much they get charged for transactions paid for with the different services. They're all too high especially for them really not doing anything on their end but keeping the computers up and running.

Surely if these businesses don't like the processing fees associated with Visa Debit then they are completely entitled to just not offer Visa Debit. Nobody forces them to accept it as a payment option. I don't understand why the government gets involved. Let the business owners make the decision themselves. If nobody adopts Visa Debit because the rates are too high, then that's Visas problem and they can either change their policy, or leave it as it is and have a low adoption rate.

The issue is that Visa Debit cards process on the machine as a normal debit card and some businesses accept EDIT:debit but not Visa outright. The unfortunate truth of it all is that payment is done more and more electronically (I rarely carry cash myself) and these businesses have to choose between accepting the Visa Debit card or not making the sale which puts them at an uncomfortable situation. And in the case of Interac, they are still providing the service EDIT: and the machines just not getting any money.
