Comparative plan?

Do you guys have anything comparative to Public mobiles current $40 for 4gigs?

I've been Koodo customer since highschool (so 12 odd years?) and I've been fairly happy with everything over all these years. You're not perfect but you have been pretty on point over the years.

Now I'm not a huge data user but I have been pushing against my cap more often lately and was thinking about upgrading. Thing is I can't ignore the value being proposed by PublicMobile, and everything except wind is all Rogers or Belus network now so it's all same.

Do you have anything that would keep me from porting out this weekend?

Hello weedy Unfortunately there's hasn't been any retention plans available at Koodo since I am with them unfortunately. So I would not hope a match unfortunately

It seems that from what others have said when they tried to get a match is Koodo gives something better than what the person has but not as good as public's plan. If it suits you better then go for it. Like Koodo, public mobile is a subsidiary of Telus so you'd still get the same cell service. Just keep in mind calls can only be made in province but you can purchase non expiring nation wide minutes or use Fongo or Textnow or other VoIP services for the times you need to call out of province or If I read it correctly being out of province as well. Don't forget I you sign up fo auto payment, it'll be 38 a month.

The Public plan you posted about is a limited time promo not a permanent plan. We do not have and don't plan to have anything in the exact same ballpark. Public works a little differently, virtually no customer service, no phones to sell etc. I do get the attraction and people have certainly can make trade-offs. It's really a personal call based on one's needs.

Weedy, keep in mind that the Public Mobile plan is province-wide (not nationwide calling) and is 90-day $120 plan with 12GB of data which must be paid ahead of time. If you run out of data, it is $30 for a 1GB top-up. You must also own your phone outright and be prepared to buy another outright if you decide to upgrade. Not to knock Public Mobile, but there are dozens if not hundreds who are without service right now due to porting issues and are patiently waiting for help from four very busy moderators.

I'm aware. Losing nation wide calling would suck but not THAT much, I can still text or hangouts.

I've always tried to own my phone outright and unlocked.

The idea of having a pool of data so I could use 3 gigs one month and 1 the next is interesting. I'm on the $40 1gig plan right now. And there have been a couple times this year when I needed to use my phone as a hotspot where more then 1gig would have come in handy.

I could care less about prepaying. If Koodo let me buy 12 months in advance and offered X% off I would do that.

I don't want to leave Koodo, but this really has me thinking. Especially since it's still Telus.

Forgot to mention -- roaming is not available (yet) with Public Mobile. They have an upcoming rollout for US roaming sometime this month but no details are available just yet. If you do occasionally need to call outside the province, you can buy an add-on (200 minutes for $8 or 400 minutes for $15) which **does** roll over until you use it up. I say go ahead (sorry everyone) and take the plunge. You will save $6 every 90 days if you do autopay and $3 every 90 days for every year you stay with Public Mobile (to a maximum of $15 per 90 days).

I like the idea of being rewarded for continuing to be an upstanding customer.

The few times I have needed customer service and called in I've always gotten a long winded version of "Nope, can't do shit Sir. We aren't <insert 'premium' carrier here> ".
I was also forced to buy a new sim if I wanted to continue service when my original-since-highschool once finally stopped registering to the network. I'm still peeved about that.

Weedy, be sure to check out the Public Mobile Community (forums) for some useful advice about porting from Koodo. May save you a lot of grief when if/when you do port over.
