So I see you chose android Settings, wireless and networks, more, data usage There should be a switch for cellular data in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Turn it off.

Yes. If your on android its very simple to set your Data off when you leave the house. I got in the habit of doing so right after say, putting on my shoes I would flick the data to the OFF position. Also depending on the model of phone you have, your status bar at the top of your phone where you can turn off wifi, data, airplane mode should allow you to turn off your Mobile Data. There is also Data apps that can turn off data to certain apps or all apps. Hope i could help in anyway.

" At the moment it will only work when home."

You would need to set up Wi-Fi access at each location you wish to connect. Unlike cellular data which works most anywhere you go without having to take any special steps, Wi-Fi may be different at each place you go, requiring you to login (using a variety of steps) at each location. Some, like Tim Horton's or McDonalds might be a quick 'OK' to login at other locations, but many places will be different logins at each place you go.

My data is always off and I turn it on when I needed.
If you go to setting > Network/connection > Wifi > More setting > Advance setting > Check on the " Network notification"  and/or  "Scanning always available"
Then I always know if Wifi network is available. And you sign in to network(McDonald, library, shopping mall, restaurant...etc)
Thank you.  I am going to check this when I next go out.
