Will Koodo unlock a new customer's phone?

I'm thinking of buying an iPhone with Koodo on a tab. Only thing is, I will be travelling soon and would like to have the phone unlocked. Will Koodo do so if I agree to pay the tab off?

This will be a brand new account so I'm not sure.

Hi pulk10!

You'll need to wait 90 days after the activation to have your phone unlocked 🙂

Thanks for your reply Daniel. I guess I'll have to switch after or try elsewhere.

Hey Pulk,
The 90 Day wait to unlock your phone is the same policy as any carrier in Canada as it is set by CRTC. If you want to get the phone unlocked right away, you can purchase it outright from Koodo or you can purchase it directly from Apple where it is unlocked right away.

You can always unlock your phone with a 3rd party unlock service, usually it's much cheaper too. Check eBay for some great deals 🙂

Unlock codes for iPhones are usually alot more than carrier unlocking, if you had an Android then definitely you can find it cheaper elsewhere. You could buy a iPhone already unlocked straight from Apple if your willing to buy it outright.

Yeah, in OP's case I would also recommend purchasing the iPhone directly through Apple  that way it is already unlocked (no carrier fee to unlock it) and it's the same price since the tab is basically just an interest free loan. Plus depending on the phone's model, you can get whatever color and storage option you want!

I'd agree normally but buying it on the tab can still make a big difference. If I buy an iPhone 6S Plus 16 GB from Apple or Koodo at retail price, it'll be $1,055 or somewhere around there. With the tab, I can get it for $380 upfront + $504 in the tab so basically $200 less.

Even with the unlocking fees ($90 from 3rd party), I still come out ahead.

Guess I'll switch over after I come back or try my luck with Virgin/Fido.

All vendors have similar policies. The third party unlocks for Apple I've found to be rather sketchy compared to Android where even if it's a scam it's only like a 6$ loss. But yes, waiting until after your trip might be the best option for you at the moment. Or use your savings and get another cheaper unlocked phone from Staples or BestBuy for your calls and texts and use your iPhone as a tablet for cameras and such.
