No. You have to contact Koodo with your imei number and they will give you an unlock code to unlock your phone.

Is it even possible to have a software update to unlock a phone? I believe the question is: "Will Koodo provide software updates to unlocked phones brought to Koodo from another carrier."

At best, they will offer updates to models that have sold in the past, but it may be the original carrier which actually pushes the update to phones, based onIMEI.

Is it even possible to have a software update to unlock a phone? For Android, it's the [i]original seller that provides brand-based software updates, as well as mandated free unlock codes. There is no requirement to be connected to any specific mobile data network. The updates can be done any time you are on wifi (System => About phone => Update Center), but you must contact the original vendor for unlock codes.

Most carriers have some unique features that are tied to the operating system. On my unlocked T-Mobile G3, I still receive updates to T-Mobile TV and my selectable calling options include voice over LTE and wifi calling even though I will just get an error trying to use these with Koodo. There is also no guarantee that if Koodo does implement these features that they will work with my handset since I will not receive the Koodo software update.

You still have the option of using a third-party service to unlock any Android set for under $10 on ebay or Kijiji if the original vendor does not cooperate (free unlocking is a Canadian, not American policy).

No, the question was can Koodo provide software updates to unlock phones bought from them.
Since they are updating the OS, could they unlock the phones?

7 months to respond. No, Koodo is not going to provide "software updates" to unlock old phones bought from them.

@James : you don't need a software update to unlock the phone. You could request an unlock code for free from Koodo.

If you would like to update your software, you could borrow an active Koodo SIM from some one, and use it to update the software on the phone.

And there are also codes you can type into your dialer on certain phones to bring up the unlock code entry screen if you don't have a different carrier SIM Card. They're different codes so just search on Google for your specific phone and you should be able to find the dialer code for your specific device (manufacturer)
