Question

Why does my new Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 not have an FM radio. Is it because Koodo disables the FM chip, or does this phone not have it?

Why does my new Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 not have an FM radio. Is it because Koodo disables the FM hardware, or does this phone not have an FM chip?

It's usually the carrier's choice although manufacturers also have a role. Since international versions seem to have it enabled I'd say it's a Telus/Koodo policy for the a5 in Canada. Carriers generally don't comment on why but when a media outlets covers it the speculation is usually to monetize more data usage for audio streaming.

You can check out the following and drill down thru the links. Still won't get your FM radio buzzing...

Side note if your looking for a phone that Koodo presently sells that does have a built in FM radio then the G6 has a working FM radio and its an incredible phone especially at the sale price Koodo is selling it at right now, I absolutely love mine and haven't had a single issue with it even using it nearly non stop every waking moment for the last 4 months.

I just phoned Koodo and they confirmed they do not disable the hardware, so they transferred my call to Samsung. Unfortunately, Samsung positively confirmed for me that my Galaxy A5 2017 does not have an FM radio as part of its hardware. I now feel cheated because all my other phones had one...

Are you within the 15 day return period? If so bring it back and get the G6 it's a way better phone in every way and has the FM radio you desire. Or look for a used one online

Any review outside of Canada shows the Fm radio in use of that phone. I'm really surprised that they would either lie or not have a Fm chip in the Canadian version.

Try downloading this app they may indeed have a chip just not an app to use that chip https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clearchannel.iheartradio.controller

My a520w 2017 model confirmed from Samsung today that the phone does come with the tuner and that the Carrie loads their own roms when the receive the devices... there for my tuner has bin disabled by there carrier.. I'm not impressed how thy strip us of our features we fucking pay for ..500 fucking dollars and the have disabled my radio.. unreal... I won't stop.. untell Samsung makes a new rule that if the feature is on the phone thy don't have a right to take it away just to make more money off us .. just the though of it makes me sick... I want my radio...somone told me thy had a bell Rom and the radio worked... other people said the opisit.. I download the a520f Rom and in doing so I corrupted modem/basband/efs file.. I can't seem to find a reliable backup restore method for efs in case I break it again.. I had to pay to get it fix damit..somone needs to hack this so we can use our runner please and thanks guys

All you needed to do was download an app that uses the tuner the chip isn't disabled there's just no app that is using it installed you just need to download one from the PlayStore.

I second the return-for-a-G6 vote. FM radio works and it's an awesome phone.
Samsung pretty much lied to you... if you install a custom Rom you have access to the fm radio.. most likely been disabled through the kernel

There's a thread on the French side that has the answer:

https://communaute.koodomobile.com/koodofr/topics/pas-de-radio-fm-dans-les-applications-sur-mon-sams...

To summarize: the North American version of the phone does not have [i]firmware for the FM radio. The customer in question has a friend with the identical phone, but bought in France, which does have a functional FM radio.

Flashing the firmware of the European version onto the Koodo phone enables the radio. So the hardware is not lacking.

I did flash the the other firmware it got the app to work but I'm doing so I lost efs and so my phone was done until I paid someone else to fix it cause for some reason I could not fix it my self

Try out next radio: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nextradioapp.nextradio). Works wonders.

NextRadio will not work because Samsung Canada has disabled the FM radio chip in the kernel. When they first released the Samsung A5 2017, the FM radio was working, and then they disabled it with a firmware update just here in Canada.

This phone is sold in many countries all around the world and all still have FM radio working except here. It's a scam from Samsung Canada so mobile operators can make more money with us...

Works just fine on my S9+, I'd be surprised to see them block one of their phones and not the other. I've also seen weirder though.

Because they were forced to unblock it but just for the S9 and S9+.

And it also worked on my Note 8 and I believe users have said it works on the S8. It just seems weird to me that they would only block one out of the all of them.

I also tried a S8+ with Android 8.0.0 G955WVLU4BRF5 and the FM radio chip is blocked.

@Dinh: Yes it was rogers firmware. In the US it's the same hardware and all the S8 or S8+ have the FM radio unlocked.
