Hi Jennifer, If you have been charged for data it is because you used data! In the settings of your phone there should be a data usage section that can tell you what app used data so you can know for next time. If data is something you never use, you can call Koodo using *611 from your Koodp phone and ask them to place a data block on your account. Doing this however, will also block MMS messages from being sent or received from your phone, so if you use picture messaging, then the data block is not the greatest of ideas.
When you turn on data to send or recieve picture messages other apps can sync in the background as well as any widgets you have on your Homescreen such as weather. If you go into your data usage like Mathieu said and find the apps that are taking data you can disable background data of those apps so they won't sync unless you open them. To do so tap on the app and on the next screen scroll to the bottom of the page and check off to disable background data.
