Why am I being charged for data?

In order to send and recieve mms, I need data on. I changed my apn this way only mms can use data. Koodo charged me $5 last month for data usage. I checked my data usage (I have the int'l sgs 2 i9100) and it said only messaging is using data. Is there anyway to get a refund and to prevent data being used on anything other than mms? This is not fair...because this is the 3rd time I've been charged for data usage I had no idea was being used.

What usually happens in your case is that when the mobile data is on, the phone will check the internet for updates in regards to the existing apps on your phone. What I was able to do is go into the Accounts and Sync option in my phone and turn background data off. So far, I have yet to run into any issues. Are you able to do that with your phone? In regards to the credit, it would be up to the agent you speak with when/if you call Koodo to inquire. It may be long but give this thread a read. I know it says Ace 2 but for Android phones, the settings are MOSTLY the same 🙂 http://community.koodomobile.com/koodo/topics/change_apn_to_disable_internet_while_enabling_mms_on_samsung_ace_2
Regardless of how you set up the APN, when you turn on mobile data, you accept any data charges that appear on your phone. Setting the APN to just MMS does not guarantee no other data use. MMS requires an active data connection, there isn't a way around this. Since this is the 3rd time you've been charged, I can't see you getting a credit. It's clear you know that MMS uses data. This is unfortunate, but that's how it goes. The only recommendaiton I can make is to have wifi connected when you are going to send/receive mms.

MMS may be part of your plan, however it still requires a data connection to work. That's how the HSPA network was built.

Every month I get charged $5.00- 10.00. Extra for usage, I have never gone over my amounts. I have unlimited messaging, don't send pictures, make long distance calls. I don't have paper billing and my on line usage doesn't show why I am being billed the extra money.
I did that too...I've restricted apps from using background data and I have enabled the restrict background data. Im being charged for 57mb..currently trying to figure out the problem.

Not too sure if you saw it in time as I did update my original reply but give that link I posted a read as there does seem to be a way to only have mms work on your phone and not standard data use.

That's the pay-per use data rate. Anything between 26kb & 25mb will be charged $5. MMS won't count towards data, however other applications will.

any idea on how to restrict Android OS from using data?

Hey Sam, the only absolute ways that we can restrict mobile data usage is by either adding a Data Block addon to your account or by you turning the mobile data off. Either one will prevent the usage of picture messaging however. ________________________ If you see a good answer, give it a star.
