"Updating camera firmware. Please wait..." after official Stagefright update on Samsung S4 (5.0.1)

Userlevel 1
Updated yesterday to fix the Stagefright bug on an SGH-I337M Samsung Galaxy S4, which I've only got for 1 month (new). Basically, the rear camera only shows a black screen, with a pop-up stating "Updating camera firmware. Please wait..." Cannot take pictures, and after a while, the camera app stops and the home screen is shown.

I dialed *#34971539# to check the firmware version, and got the following:
 * rear camera Cam FW Ver: null
 * rear camera Phone FW Ver: O13F0LAGI02
 * front camera Cam FW Ver: S5K6B2YX
 * front camera Phone FW Ver: S5K6B2YX

The "null" value looks weird, any idea how to fix this camera firmware issue?

Have you restarted the phone since? If it only happened after the update, I may also suggest that you do a factory restore on the phone to clear out possibility of a buggy update.

Samsung could not fix. Said to send phone back.

Restarting did not help, neither did the restore ... I did notice that the front camera is working fine, only the rear one is giving trouble.

The only option I can suggest is to flash a previous version of Android 5.0.1 firmware. Once installed, check to see if you have an operational camera. If all goes as planned, you should receive notification of a software update, (this will include the Stagefright patch). Proceed with the update and see if the camera problem persists. The reason I'm suggesting you install a previous version of Android and not a current firmware revision is because I'm assuming the camera worked prior to the update. Head over to SamMobile and click on the firmware dated 2015-04-01. Select 'Regular Download'. Scroll down the page and read through the instructions. You will need Odin, a utility used to flash Samsung firmware to your S4. There's a link to Odin in the instructions. http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I337M/KDO/

Before seeing rikkster's reply, I contacted technical support, who recommended to unplug the battery for 10 seconds. Oddly, this seemed to help, although 50% of the times the rear camera still refused to work.

Then I used rikkster's advice, and after going back to the 2015-04-01 firmware, upgrading to the newest firmware again and unplugging the battery, I finally got the camera to work reliably 🙂

So, thanks a lot rikkster (and technical support) for the suggestions (... and let's cross fingers)!

... and today the camera started updating firmware again, without any clear reason (didn't even update any app for 3 weeks).

i know i received an update on my s4  a couple days ago so it could be a possibility it corrupted the camera firmware again you might have to retry rikksters suggestion

Just a heads-up: the update problem has been going on and off. My latest hunch is that it was due to the TorchLight app, which uses the camera's flash as light source. I uninstalled it, and for the moment, the problem seems to be gone.

Before doing that, maybe check to disconnect the battery for 10 seconds (while phone is on), it helped me twice to get rid of the error, without factory-reset.
