Unlocking phones

I want to sell my old phone as it's paid off and I have no use for it. I've heard that other phone providers charge a $50 fee to get the phone unlocked so it can be used with a different provider. Is koodo the same?

Hello Ashleigh,

As of December 1st. 2017, and as per the CRTC's Wireless Code of Conduct, "If a device is, or becomes, locked to a service provider’s network, that service provider must unlock the device, or give the customer the means to unlock the device, upon request, at no charge".

I think the best course of action is to send Koodo a PM via Facebook or DM via Twitter to request an unlock code. The logos/links appear at the bottom right of this page. Other options might be to visit a Koodo kiosk or call Koodo directly (*611), though wait times may be longer than usual.

You'll need to provide the phones' IMEI number which can be found by dialing *#06# from the phones' dialpad. Best to write this number down. Also, you will need a same-sized SIM card from a different provider in order to bring up the screen that will allow you to enter the unlock code.

It is very important to know that you have to be a customer or have a koodo account while you will be requesting unlock code. Generally speaking

As reported, you don't need to have to be a current customer to unlock. The phone must be from Koodo though.

@Azure

That is even greater news. Folks can dig now for any locked phones that they owned in the past or someone may gave it to them or they just simply bought it in some second hand store or on the web and then call to respective provider to supply them with unlock code.
Thank you everyone. The phone I'm wanting to sell is a galaxy S5 neo. I just upgraded to the s7 and no longer need the other phone. I will contact Koodo 🙂

If by chance you don't have access to a SIM card from a different provider, you can access the Network Lock screen by dialing [b]#7465625*638*# from your phones' dial pad. Enter the eight-digit unlock code you receive from Koodo in the space provided and tap OK. Phone is now unlocked. Tried and tested successfully on the S5 Neo and Galaxy S7.

Hi to All,

Now I realized why Koodo Customer Service have been busy lately. They may have to deal with high volume of folks that may have never been even customers of koodo but wanted to unlock their phones. For some, unlocking phones could be a new activity or a hobby or pass time. Lol

In that case Public Mobile is a winner here. They can spend more time on customers than dealing with this business of unlocking phones and save money to put another ad at TTC Subway.
