Unlocked US verizon phone (HTC M7) not working with Koodo SIM

My unlocked verizon HTC M7 won't work with my Koodo SIM. I tried editing the APN settings (using this site http://aide.koodomobile.com/Portals/0/Phones/PDFFiles/Android.pdf) but I cannot make calls. The koodo site says the IMEI should work. I do not care about having LTE or anything like that, just using for texting and calling. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks

Hi Jess,

Are you able to see Telus/Koodo from the list of available networks?

No, no networks come up

If no networks come up, than it most likely does not work with Koodo. The Verizon model of the M7 seems to have different compatible networks (according to this site). Chad can correct me if I'm wrong...

Verizon is largely CDMA, a technology not supported in Canada anymore other than in remote regions up north. They are more recent adherents of GSM, so their older devices are far from guaranteed to work in Canada.

Check your device here, http://www.protectyourdata.ca/check-the-status-of-your-device-in-canada/
Checked, it's not blacklisted

Since it's not blacklisted, it's very likely a compatibility issue. Verizon's LTE network appears to split data and voice between a "GSM" (more accurately 4G LTE) LTE for data, and CDMA for voice. HTC's specs page on the One M7 says:
 "4G - CDMA:
  • Verizon: 800/1900MHZ, UMTS/HSPA 900/2100MHz,GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz, LTE 700MHz (Band 13)"

I would just stay away from anything Verizon until they sort out the phase out of CDMA. Supposedly the HTC A9 is their first non-CDMA phone that will allow voice calls without CDMA connectivity.

I'd suggest selling it in the US either via Ebay and put it towards a non-Verizon sold phone.

Do you know if other US phone brands are like this (T-mobile, Sprint, AT&T)?

Sprint might be, not sure. Your safest bet is T-Mobile and AT&T if you want to get a phone from the US.

From experience AT&T is your safest bet without having to check specs.
